Im staying with a friend for a while.  Her internet works fine on her computer.  When I connect the cable my computer recognises it but says it cannot make a network or internet connection - but it never asks me for the password!  I know the password, I just cant find anywhere to enter it!

Does the cable go to a 'modem' box, or does it go straight into the wall?

If the cable goes to a 'modem' box, you shouldn't need to do anything else, and can you post the error that your computer tells you?

If the cable goes straight into the wall, do you have 'Dial-Up' or 'Broadband'?

    Broadband

You may need to set up a PPPoE network connection to connect to your Internet Service Provider.

    • Click the Start button, and choose Control Panel
    • Choose Network and Sharing Center
    • Choose "Set up a new connection or network"
    • Choose "Connect to the Internet"
    • Choose "Broadband (PPPoE)
    • Enter your username and password, and connect to the Internet.

    Dial-Up

You may need to set up a Dial-Up network connection to connect to your Internet Service Provider.

    • Click the Start button, and choose Control Panel
    • Choose Network and Sharing Center
    • Choose "Set up a new connection or network"
    • Choose "Set up a Dial-Up connection"
    • Enter your provider's phone number, then your username and password.
    • Connect to the Internet.

When you plug the network cable into your PC are you saying you get no internet connection and the network icon on the task bar shows a red cross?

If you are trying to email from your PC using a mail client, as apposed to web mail, you will probably need to amend your account settings to allow relaying

Not quite correct, if you are in the UK and use the supplied tv/internet box for your connection it requires your account password

ie the PC is mated to the connection box

There is no password required for a hard wired connection. A password is only required for a secured wireless connection..

Im trying to access email on the web - yahoo.
