There seems to be a bug. I'm having the same "not enough free space" backup problem as the two people above stated. There's another thread like this where three other people are having this problem. I've had my laptop for a few months and the backup worked fine up until about 10 days ago.
The disk that your backups are being saved on doesn't have enough free space.
I have a 916GB hard drive of which 445GB is being used. I have a backup hard drive that is 931GB. Windows 7 Backup and Restore is giving me the message in the title, telling me that I don't have enough space to backup. This seems weird as I have about the same size backup drive as my regular hard drive, and I'm not even using all of the space on the regular hard drive. Does anyone know how to fix this?
The first time I setup Backup and Restore it worked, but soon after, as Windows 7 continued to automatically make backups, and I was told that there was not enough space.
System image is set to: "Keep only the latest system image and minimize space used by backup" so I thought I should have enough space to save everything.
My space usage summary is:
Data file backup : 581.50GB
System image: 349.52GB
Other files: 499.30MB
Free space: 6.57 MB
Total Space 931.51GB
Shouldn't my Data file backup be less than that? as I am only using 445GB of space on my hard drive. Ideally I would like to save one copy of each file on my hard drive with each backup (it is unnecessary for me to save older versions of the same files), plus one System image. If I don't have enough space for both, I'd like to know what type I should be saving (file or system image) so that I can still be sure that I can restore all my important files if my hard drive dies, and how to set up my backup and restore so that only one is being saved.
I'd really appreciate some help with this problem.

2012-04-04T17:08:41+00:00 Seems like dodging the issue. I too have the same issue. Trying to back up 95 g on network two terabyte drive with 1,3 TB free. Obviously an issue NOT related to disk size regardless of whatever posted versus actual disk space. Not related to Restore, nor even NTFS. Just some sort of flaw.

2011-01-26T00:21:22+00:00 Again, the problem is not that my C drive doesn't have enough space, it is that my backup drive doesn't have enough space.
The 6.57 mb's of free space is taken from Backup and Restore's "space usage summary", and refers to the free space on my backup drive.
Is there any way to get someone from Microsoft answering this problem? Do I need to repost before someone from Microsoft will answer me? This seems like something Backup and Restore should be capable of doing in a straightforward manner (i.e. backing up a hard drive to a hard drive that is the same size as it). The customer support for this feature is horrible.

2011-01-09T17:26:08+00:00 System Restore was never on. Thanks anyways.
Any other ideas? I feel like I can't be the only one who has had this problem as I seem to be doing everything right.

2011-03-10T00:59:20+00:00 I have the same problem. A 1TB drive running out of space for a 530GB backup. It tells me I have 356 GB of free space, but backup fails every time. I'm currently retrying with just my libraries. Not looking good.
