QSI SBW 242 CDRW/DVD wont play DVD or BURN a CD (Will PLAY music CD) [AFTER FORMAT HD and Re-Install}

Dell Inspiron5100  running WInXP SP3.

Due to malware, I had to FORMAT my HD and re-install WInXP   from OEM Disk.  I also re-installed WIN DVD4 from the OEM disk that came with the laptop.

Checking SYSTEM/DeviceMGR/Hardware doesnt indicate any problem with the drive but : it WONT PLAY A DVD or Burn a CD (which it did before)

Cant update anything from  QSI as they were absorbed by COREL years ago.  No support available for  WINDVD4

When trying to run  WINDVD4  with a DVD in Drive, I get a Popup screen from WINDVD that says:

CREATE OVERLAY FAILED- Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again.  Of course, it worked fine with the reg settings in the past,,now Ive even tried lowering BOTH the SCREEN  RES and Color to the minimum listed but still doesnt work

It WILL play music CDs (mp3s)

Found the following in Hardware etc

Provider:  Microsoft Corp

File Version: 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp  080413-2108

Driver Date:  7/1/2001

Driver Version:  5.1.2535

Driver files

C\windows\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys

"  ""  "                               \DRIVERS\imapi.sys

"   "   "                              \DRIVERS\redbook.sys

"    "    "          \system32\ storprop.dll

I Installed and ran MICROSOFT  "FIXIT"    in regard to DVD wont play but it just led back to WINDVD4 starting and still not working.

FIXIT now lead me HERE

It seems that FORMAT/Re-install has missed something the will permit the DRIVE to  .1BURN  CDS and 2. READ  DVDs but allows CDs to PLAY

    Hi,

    1.     Are you able to read any file types like .doc or .txt from DVD?

After following all the below steps (including Update from MP9 to Media Player [MP] 11)

I can get the drive to actually DISPLAY all the data from the DVD  (Master & Commander "movie)

on the MP11 screen.  It plays (automatically) the intro music (ONLY) from the DVD (like when you put it in a DVD player, before Pressing PLAY)   MP11 shows the full contents and all files on the DVD and SEEMS  ready to play but pressing PLAY doesnt get anything.

    2. What exactly happens when you try to burn CD? Do you get any error message?

    No nothing..just sits there

    3.     How are you trying to burn CDs?

MediaPlayer, selecting a list of tracks, makes a list of tracks, then click  BURN..nothing happens

    4.     Did you try playing the contents of DVD in*windows media player*?

I didnt before but I have now.  Previously it was default to my SELECTING  WIN DVD4 as the DVD player (although I ve NEVER SEEN the WINDVD format/start page on the screen before-  I suspect it wasnt the default DVD player before either but can't recall what program PLAYED the DVDs, it just "went").  Now go back up and see 1. above for more MP11 details.

Try updating the CDRW/DVD drive drivers and check. Also update the graphic card driver.

    I did all the below.

    1.     Click Start, clickControl Panel, and then double-click System.

    2. Click theHardware tab,   then click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or clickContinue.

    3.     Right-click on CDRW/DVD drive and select Update driver.

It asks if I have a OEM driver and/disk..NO..I run the program thru..

"Hardware Update wiz cannot find a better match than software installed"

    4.     Right-click on graphic card andselect Update driver."

There is no "Graphic card" listed on Hardware.  This machine has onboard graphics using part of the  main memory (or whatever) to run the video section:

    I DO find:

SOUND VIDEO and GAME Controllers (listing)

    Audio codecs

    Audio drivers

    Legacy Video capture device

    Media control devices

    Sigma Audio

    Video codecs

All these appear normal but above that I see TWO YELLOW  warnings under "OTHER DEVICES"

?!  Ethernet controller  "drivers for this devide not installed (code28)"

?! VIDEO CONTROLLER (VGA Compatible)   I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS PERTAINS OR NOT

       Device Type- other devices

       MFG- unknown

Location  PCI bus, device 0, function 0.  "Drivers for this device are not installed, CODE28 to reinstall driver.

Went thru the usual (asks for disk..No..Cant find better")

Done yesterday.  It installed/ran "Microsoft MR Fixit"  resulting in:

"Issue:  media in CDRW/DVD drive is not readable"  CLICKED on FIX IT..and after computer "worked" on it a while, It said  STATUS:  Fixed.  St ill didnt work.   MP9 brought up the format of the DVD player but couldnt seem to read anything other then showing a list:

    UNKNOWN

    Title 1

    Title2

Title3   etc but couldnt do anything with this list.

There appeared a box asking if I wanted to update My MP9..sure why not so I shut down everything and uninstalled 9 and installed Media player 11.

GO  back up to # 1. now once again.  Thats where I am.  MP11 shows all the DVD data, The Graphics"Album/DVD  cover, all "titles" on the DVD, ANDplays the "intro" DVD audio track but won't actually PLAY the DVD.

So far this is PROGRESS.  We are at the point where it at least LOOKS like we're ready to PLAY and MP  can SEE all the info on the DVD.

I see many other folks on other websites asking the same question:  Player wont run after FORMAT and Reinstall of WIN operating system (and In my case:  WinXP  SP3  and   WIN DVD4 from OEM disk)

Thanks a lot for your help so far..hopefully we can get to the next step and get the CDRW/DVD drive to "PLAY"

    UMESH P:

I can now BURN (and play) an AUDIO CD on the drive using  Media Player 11.  I give up trying to update/use the (several years OLD)  WinXP4.  (My older ROXIO doesnt work either)

Now all we have to do is figure out how to PLAY a DVD (the one I'm using is a Movie DVD-  Master & Commander:  Far Side of the World.)

MP11  will load it and show all the data on the DVD (Progress!), will play the underlying music/audio tracks (Progress!) but won't actually  PLAY the VIDEO PORTION..the screen is BLACK.

Any ideas where I should go from here UMESH ?

    thanks, Alan

UPDATE:  I used ti use ROXIO and/or Media Player to burn Audio CDs.

After the lengthy exercise above AND installing  MediaPlayer 11  (over MP9), I am happy to report that:

I can now BURN (and play) an AUDIO CD on the drive using  Media Player 11.

Now all we have to do is figure out how to PLAY a DVD (the one I'm using is a Movie DVD-  Master & Commander:  Far Side of the World.)

MP11  will load it and show all the data on the DVD, will play the underlying music but won't actually  PLAY..
