Original title:Can't set system restore (error code 0x81000203)

I am unable to set a restore point in Windows 7 Home Premium.  When I cick on System protection I get

"There was an unexpected error in the properety page: System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again. (0x81000203) Please close the property page and try again."

Trying again produces the same message.

So far I have done the following on the basis of answers to questions on this problem.

*Made sure that Microsoft Software Shadow Copy is started and on Automatic (see above)

*Run SFC/scannow

*Enabled Volume Shadow Copy and Windows backup and set them to automatic.

The problem remains.

I have not been able to renable System Restore (assuming this needs to be done) as because it seems I need 7 Ultimatein order to use gpedit.msc.  (In fact I am attempting to install an upgrade to Ultimate, but I can't because it needs to set a system resore point which it can't establish because of this problem!)

Can anyone help?

    Hi juwinrha,

If you have installed any security software, then try to disable the Security Software temporarily and check if it helps.

Note: Enable the security software back after resolving the issue. If the issue resolves then you might need to uninstall the anti-virus software and install it back or change the settings of the same.

    Hope this information is helpful.

Try starting the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" service.

I was also facing system restore point not creating when I want to. I had third party program installed in past and it was interfering with the system restore (actually it was disabled in this program) the program was TuneUp utility. If you also had installed on your system than remove it or there is an option TURBO MODE turn it OFF. And than try using system restore it will work. It solved my problem. I think it will also solve your's problem too :)

This is the step that actually worked for me. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The last time I had this happen I was on the phone with support from the manufacturer of my PC and they said that my only option after all the other suggested "fixes" didn't work was to do a complete system restore. This corrected the problem without having to wipe my system clean.
