I was able to follow the procedure at the link at the end of this post.  I only went through item 8 of Step 4 since I don't actually have an HP printer and didn't want to install it.  After Item 7 "Click the Windows Update button and wait for the updates to complete." I find the "HP Deskjet 970Cse" in the list of printers.  I didn't find the 3820 or 3850 but from the thread I mentioned in my first post above I think it sounded like you have a better chance with the 970cse anyway.  I would try the following link one more time as the "HP Deskjet 970Cse" is there with that method :  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02663742&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=61237

ok i saw and clicked on hp deskjet 970cse ....... but i did not see what step 10 said about an installing device drive in the botttom right ..............so i clicked next and the printer name showed up as 970 etc ...........the instructions said to cancel at that moment but i did not think that the driver was installed so i clicked next and it added the hp970 ..........and that is shown in my device and printer area ......below under unspecified is the hp 1115 ....... i highlighted it ( maybe i have to make it my default printer and i do not know how ) but when i went to print something it listed the hp970 but not the hp 1115 and the port listed was the L1 not usb  .........now what ???? this is sooooooooo frustrating and i want you to know how much i appreciate your help ...........is there anyway to see if the driver is in?  what do i do now ............. thanks

Have you tried find a Model either ONE higher or LOWER than the Model you have, in HP?

The 'outside shell' may be different, but, the 'insides' are not, usually because HP has a 'habit' of using old stock....in a 'new skin'.

I use a HP 'All-in-one PSC', for instance. A 1310/1315! (Either set of driver will work with it!)

Which isn't too far off the mark, from a 1115, are you getting the idea, now?

i was there before you recommended it and could not find hp deskjet 3820 or 3850 , even with windows update for a larger list ..........next to  driver 970c or 970cse the is a * which states windows update, but i could not find any anywhere ...............also when i right clicked the printer, so called generic IEEE 1284.4 it does not give an avenue to go to a different port ...... what am i missing or doing wrong??? thanks so much for your info but something is amiss with me or that page ................

The following thread (especially the post by Bob Headrick on Oct 2, 1010) may help you get the 970cse driver installed):  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/neither-original-hp-nor-ms-drivers-for-the-hp/64335931-9e99-4129-a3be-64dc607c6e1c
