How do I play MKV files?

Greetings,

I can't find a Windows Media Player forum, so I thought I'd try here.

Windows Media Player 12.0.7601.17514 doesn't play MKV files. I found a codec at DivX, but I have a 64-bit version of Windows. Do I have to download a 64-bit codec?

Thanks,

Shane.

I installed the DivX codec pack. Windows Media Player now shows the video, but no sound.

When I try playing an MKV in DivX Plus Player, I get an error message:

"You may need an additional audio decoder to play the soundtrack of this file.

This file contains a track in the Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192") format. You may need to install a DirectShow decoder for this audio format in order to hear the soundtrack of this file."

I downloaded a filter from www.divXmovies.com/faq, and it seems to work now.

    Thanks,

    Shane.

Download and install the codec.  It won't hurt.

Neither would getting some of the codec packs out there.

I'm hoping to avoid downloading another player.

The Windows Media Player FAQ says that I have to instal 64-bit codecs onto a 64-bit machine. I just can't seem to find any.

    Not really.

    Get VLC Player.
