**Original Title:**svchost.exe application error

Hey folks.

Was wondering if someone could help with this error im getting. So i get this error message at the logon screen. (windows xp)

svchost.exe - Application Error

the exception unknown software exception (0x0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x7d4b6dfu

OK / Cancel

Prior to this error the only main things that my system underwent was a windows update and a graphics card driver update (ATI 4870x2). I dont know weather that has any relevance or if it is related to something else.

The problem past the error message manifests itself in a few ways.

  • Sometimes the computer dosnt even load up after i logon. It has my wall paper but nothing else. I can access the task manager however.
  • No sound works. Not even system sounds. In fact if i go to the sound panel in the control panel, it tells me that there is no audio device. But the sound card is recognized within the device manager.
  • Occasionally the windows that i open and task bar revert back to windows classic visuals. (grey with black writing etc) This could be unrelated. (this reverts back to normal after a few mins)
  • Whenever i logon the hardware wizard pops up saying its found new hardware - Network Controller - and if i try to install it, the wizard cant find any drivers.

Computer Specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.8Ghz

2GB

3 Hard drives with OS installed on the largest (1TB)

Creative SB X-Fi sound card (gamer pro version i think)

Ummm.. not sure what other information i can give.

Would really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this, and if there is any other information i can give that would help solve the problem then let me know.

cheers \0

It is always sensible in this situation to run a check for malware

Boot the computer to safe mode with networking and download and install Malwarebytes (freeware version for home users only), update definitions and run in safe mode. Disable other security software whilst you are doing scans.

    http://www.precisesecurity.com/how-to/ht-smodewnet.htm

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

Download and run SuperAntiSpyware (Free Edition)

    http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any from more than 48 hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. You will see a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. This places a copy of the report into your Clipboard. Paste into the body your message. Make sure that this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

    What anti-virus software is installed?

Have you used any Registry Cleaners or installed any system optiimisers?

Amongst the errors I noticed  ar reference to Dragon Age Toolset. Try uninstalling and see if if it reduces the number of errors?

I use Norton 360 and afaik i dont use any system optimizers.

I unsinstalled the dragon age 2 tool set. But in the unstalling menu it asked me a bunch of stuff about wanting to delete my SQL databases or removing SQL 2005 (or something along those lines). I chose not to, because i didnt know what it would effect outside of the toolset. But I figured with some of the errors in the event logger being SQL errors i was wondering if that mite have something to do with the problems im having. Also considering that for some reason the application "SQL Server Configuration Manager" has popped up in my start menu most used applications section... and i have never used it. There mite be something wrong with it.

I shall post any new errors or any change in the types of errors after i restart.

ummm... yea... thats alot of info. Some of them may have been caused by me. In my attempt to fix the error before posting here, i had disabled automatic updates and rebooted. I had also set "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework " to disabled and fidled with it a bit, but it has since been reverted.
