SD card reader stopped reading; eeepc Win XP

I have an eeepc 1005HA with Windows XP Home. Great system -- no problems. Auto updates to Windows and Asus. But recently the SD card reader stopped reading card data. When a card is inserted it appears in Windows Explorer as Removable Disk (E:) and it makes the ding sounds. In Device Manager it appears as Disk Drives>Single Flash Reader USB Device. Uninstalling the driver in Device Manager makes it disappear from the device list, but popping the card out and back in causes it to reappear. Clicking on Removable Disk (E:) in Windows Explorer causes a long hour glass and then a prompt to insert a disk into Drive E; formatting attempts also don't work. Properties shows 0 space. Of course the cards of many sizes work fine with an external USB card reader and in other systems.

    Hi,

Is it a SD or SDHC card? SDHC cards require SDHC-capable device firmware generally not found with older devices.

Step 1: Test the Card reader in a different port to see if the port is damaged.

Step 2: If you need the data off the SD card, then you may need to contact data recovery specialist.

I am aware of the SD/SDHC issue. I have tried 4 GB, 2GB, 1 GB, and 256 MB cards with the same results: data on the cards, JPGs, and TXT files can't be read, the cards can't be formatted, and the Eee PC thinks the cards are empty and need to be formatted. Thing is, I'm almost certain it worked when the Netbook was new. I don't know exactly when it stopped working, but I suspect that a Windows update or an Asus update is to blame; maybe some default in the BIOS was changed. The three USB ports work fine. I haven't messed around much at all with this system (I reserve that for my desktop). So I dunno.

    Thanks for your answers.

Are you trying to read an SD card that's 4GB or larger? If so, it's an SDHC card, and it's possible that your reader reads only SD cards, and not SDHC cards.
