reinstall touchpad driver or wireless mouse drivers
Why is my cursor only working on my taskbar, or current window, in Windows 7?
My cursor will randomly not work on anything except either the window i'm in or the taskbar
It will do one of these:
-Only let me click stuff on the taskbar, and when i put the cursor over a window it won't highlight or let me click anything inside except that it will highlight the minimize, restore down, and exit buttons but won't do anything when i click them, and i can right click the icons and choose whatever options appear for the programs.
-Only let me click things in the window i currently have up. I can interact with anything inside the window. If i'm using Google Chrome (which is the browser i generally use) then if i click a tab, it will x out of that tab. Nothing on the taskbar will highlight.
Sometimes one or more of the below will be added with one of the above:
-It will act like i'm holding a key or something, sometimes it seems like i'm holding shift, sometimes ctrl, sometimes it does things that seem to do things that would happen if you were holding multiple keys
Ex: If i click something in a program it would produce a result that would seem like it was half a result of holding one key, and half a result of holding another.
Ex: Ex: When playing the popular game "Minecraft" if i use a mod to give myself a 64 stack, it only gives me one, as if i was right clicking instead of left. Other times when i'm in my inventory, it acts like i'm holding shift when i'm not, but it also does things that don't normally happen when i hold shift key and click.
-My cursor randomly acts like i'm left clicking or middle clicking.
-I may have forgotten something
Troubleshooting that i have tried:
- I have tried removing the wireless mouse and using the touchpad.
- I have tried to reset my computer (this worked, but the problem soon came back)
- I have pulled up the task manager to check some things
after pulling up the task manager the problems stopped. but after a while it started back again so i restarted Task Manager and it stopped again, but evertime i did this the time that the problems went away got shorter, and now it's not working at all.
- Pulled up Task Manager and googled any suspicious looking background programs (this didn't turn up much info, because i have very little knowledge of what background programs should and shouldn't be working.
- Looked around on this site (found nothing)
- Used A Windows virus scan and it turned up nothing.
Some System info:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7700 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Computer Name: HPMANIAC
System Manufacturer: Hewlett Packard
System Model: HP Compaq 8510p
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
BIOS: KBC Version 71.3
I'm sure i've left out something, but i really hope that this information will allow someone to help me.
This problem(s) usually started happening after a long time using my computer, even shorter time if i left my computer alone for a few minutes
Now they won't go away, and pulling up task manager does nothing
(sorry for any typing errors, it took me a really long time to type and correct what i did, cause my cursor keeps clicking, and screwing up my typing)

2016-02-04T00:47:40+00:00 Just had this happen but with an external mouse. Like the original post it turned out the middle button of my mouse was stuck and constantly 'held down' after I dropped it.

2011-07-29T18:33:45+00:00 Im having the same problem and it seems to be fixed when i closed DWM.Exe in my processes
But dwm is what allows the cool window management features like when you scroll over something in the taskbar and it shows a thumbnail of it. and other window effects. However closing this did fix my problem but for some reason now i cant fix the DWM or get it to start again.

2013-07-04T16:35:22+00:00 I have a problem JUST like this.
I've told my computer to turn off the DWM.exe but that hasn't fixed it.
I don't know what else to do. I've re-installed the driver. I've tried difference mice.
It's frustrating because it worked FINE and just STOPPED.
Any suggestions other than trying to deactivate the dwm.exe process would be fantastic.
