Handle is invalid when printing

I have an HP 5510.  Working fine on Windows xp machine.  I bought a new pc with windows 7.  HP's site has no driver it says to use the windows 7 driver.  I hooked the printer up to the pc that was connected to the internet.  Driver installed fine.  Tried to print from various sources and it will not.  The printer is listed and says it is online and operational.  I get various error but when I print from notepad I get the error the handle is invalid.  I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the printer.  There was a windows update for the printer, I installed that and still no luck.  I run the HP diags test and says everything passed and asks to print a test page.  I do but it wont print and do not get an error.  I suspect this is a windows issue and not a driver issue.  Any ideas?

OK, I fixed it after lots of digging around the internet.  I booted to safemode and renamed the folder called 3 in the system32 directory.  I booted back to normal mode and then removed the printer from the device manager.  Then I let windows reinstall it.  After this I am now able to print.

Folder 3 is under the next route: C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86 and in this folder are the drivers for printers, if you have any other printer installed you will need to reinstall.

    This is not helpful.

Try the printing troubleshooter?   It's a common problem, and undoubtedly has a specific solution.  Respectfully, Wading through troubleshooting procedures is not the answer to this specific question.

I'm having this exact same problem.  I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500 and I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.  I tried to run the fix below (safe mode, rename the folder "3", etc...) but I don't have a folder labeled "3" or "Three" or anything like that in the System32 directory or anywhere else.  What is that folder?  Can anyone help?!  I've got many hours invested in configuring this new computer and sure don't want to have to do a System Restore.  Thanks.

The printer troubleshooter reports no issues.  I also did everything in step 2 prior and no help.
