Why do I get a server busy message when XP starts up?

Whenever I start up XP I get a little dialogue box saying Server busy even though I don't have a server. It says the action cannot be completed because the other programme is busy and gives the option to switch to the busy programme or retry and eventually disappears of its own accord.

What gives?

Hi PilotJohn,

In addition to Debleena's post, Can you please tell us more on your problem. Do you get "Server busy" message as soon as you login to computer or when you start any application? Also please check your startup folder located at Start -> All Programs -> Startup, to find what all applications are starting when your profile loads and try removing the one your dont want. You can post back the name of programs listed under start folder if you are not sure what to remove.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem for quite a while and didn't have a clue.

Today I started researching it (I am a novice at anything technical)

The solution for me was easy I looked in my start up- and there it was digimax viewer I removed the programme and now I don't have a problem. I have the disk so I can reinstall it if I want to.

Simple solution - Thanks Saurabh Joshi.

I only see the issue on boot up from cold, I rarely switch the machine off and if I just ignore it it eventually goes away.

    Hi Pilotjohn,

Did you make any software or hardware changes on the computer prior to this issue?

Let’s follow these steps and check if it helps.

    Step 1

You may boot the computer into ‘safe mode’ and check if the issue re-appears. It will start Windows XP with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs do not run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed, follow the steps to boot the computer in safe mode:

    a. Restart the computer.

    b. Start tapping F8 key.

    c. You will get advanced boot option window.

    d. Select the option “Safe mode”.

For more information, refer this link:

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP

    Step 2

If the issue does not re-appear in safe mode, you may configure the computer in clean boot state and check if the issue persists. It will start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps to eliminate software conflicts.

The following link has steps showing how to perform clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the section ‘Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state’ from the article: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

    Hope the information helps.

Please post back and let us know.
