the service is called Intel(R) Matrix Storage event monitor.

you can stop it wirtting this in a command terminal: net stop IAANTMON

    this worked fine for me.

I went from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 7 Ultimate last week and experienced exactly the same problem. If you love music like I do, this drove me crazy until I fixed it. Effects iTunes, Media Player and anything else with audio.

I can't take credit for it since I researched some threads and found that by disabling iaantmon.exe and iaanotif.exe (both used for raid disk setups which I don't use) the spikes that occur randomily every 5 or 10 seconds are gone, the problem is gone and everything works great. I'm running on a Sony Vaio VGN-SR520G with 8gb Ram and 720gb disk.

Just click the start button and enter msconfig into the search box. Click on the services and startup tabs and uncheck the Intel services I mentioned above. The only guarantee I make is that it works for me! Don't do it if you're running a RAID configuration with more than one hard drive.

    Good Luck,

Did you install the hw drivers for win7 provided by your PC maker, or hw makers if generic PC?

I have seen this type of problem, but on Windows XP.  This is very difficult to stop since the sound card is "picking up" the static "sounds" from a lot of internal parts.  The buzz can be cause by the power supply, CRT monitor and "other" "dirty" electronics.  Then, if you connect the "analog" internal CD / DVD sound cable, this might be acting like an antenna.
