Game installs . It is new pc. Dell took it over and said there is no problem . They said to check with Microsoft . They seem to think it is because of windows 7. Dell checked pc real good ? said it was ok . Still can not play my game that I use to play on xp all the time.

While I don't have the version grand is talking about, I have no faith whatsoever in the

Compatibility Center. It is a flawed system, as games get listed as incompatible by

people who have problems installing games  that are not Win7 related.

I know, because I have a number of games running without even using compatibly mode

    that are listed as incompatible.

I have since bought AOE3 (same pawn shop a week later), and it is fully compatible (no compatibility mode required).

AOE3 and the expansions run well on Win7.

Sorry about your PC not being up to it   grand...

Done all that before asking for help. I have learned Dell does not put a good enough graphics card in there all in one p.c. to run AOK. Dell would not tell me that. I think they knew it ,but I had to go to Microsoft to learn why there games for older versions would not play in Dells Inspiron one 23 . I can not speak for other mfg's of p.c. such as HP . There windows 7 may run AOK's . It all depends on the graphics. So that is the real answer. Thanks for you help though.

If I were you I would run the troubleshooting program as it is not compatible with windows 7,search with the "browse"  button for AOEII select the option it used to be compatible with an older version or on another computer and then tell  the computer that the game was compatible with Windows 95/98/me/nt/2000

    Hi grand96 -

Would have been better to revive your first thread so people would not just make the same

    suggestions as previously.

Now  that you have made it clear that the games installs,  one thing we never talked about in your previous thread is what does, or does not,  happen when you launch, or try to launch the game.

I see now that you have the 'Collectors' edition.

Can you install only the main game without the expansions ? If so try uninstalling and reinstalling without the expansions and see if the game runs. When you do this it may also help to install to a non-default location. Make a new folder on the C: drive for you games (not in any of the original "Programs" folders).

Then install using compatibility mode as previously explained.

Have you patched the game ?

One more trick I forgot about as I have 'profiles' for the relevant games. Your cpu may be too fast, or the game may get 'confused' by a multi-core processor.

    1. Launch the game then minimise either with the Start key or Alt-Tab.
    2. Go to Task Manager (R/click the Taskbar). Click 'Processes'.
    3. Find the games name and R/click - In 'Affinity' tick only one core of the processor and in 'Priority' tick

    'Below Normal' .

You have to do this each time you launch the game, and some games don't run after minimising,

so this trick may fail if AOE is that way.

It may be the game is incompatible after all. I guess it should not come as a surprise that a Monopoly$oft game  from 2000 would be incompatible when many others from then and before still work, but somehow it is surprising.

Sounds like a bit of double talk from Dell - no problem, but maybe an issue with Win7 ?

I guess they were saying the machine is OK, but if they were not able to run the game then there is a

    problem, as yet undetermined.

    I made a mistake earlier with  AOE3 - I didn't notice that the versions released in '06 & '07 were

expansion packs that require the main AOE3 released in '05.

How did I find out.?  Bought  AOE3  "Asian Dynasties " expansion at the local pawn shop for $5 without reading the cover - duh, huh ! Oh, well !  Looks like I'll have to find a copy of the main game on e-bay.
