Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 100GB Hi-Speed USB External Hard Drive

I tried connecting my Maxtor external hard drive model  number 3100 200GB and have Win 7 ultimate the message I am getting is this: The USB devise not recognized, Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43). What is this? and how I can resolve this problem? Thanks

    Strange as this may sound...

    Shut down the laptop completely.  Power it off.  Unplug it from power *and* remove its battery for an hour (over night if you can) and then put is all back together and boot it up.  After you get logged in - try it again.

    The other thing to try is motherboard chipset drivers for the laptop (they'll usually include the USB ports because they are part of the motherboard.)

    As far as the USB Storage Device driver particular to the maxtor - I wouldn't worry about that too much.  The problem is not with the drive at this point - but with the machine (physical or software - don't know yet.)

    Is the Windows 7 machine a laptop?

    Has the drive worked with the Windows 7 computer before?
