It doesn't sound like you are in a proper Command Prompt.  Are you launching this Command Prompt window by Start Menu/ All Programs/ Accessories/ Command Prompt?

Is the window that you are seeing turning up on its' own without action by you?

If you launch it correctly you should see this following text in the Command Prompt window.

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\usernamexxxx>

with a flashing Cursor after the >.   The Title of the window is Command Prompt.

If the Command Prompt is not loading correctly let us know.  You could try launching via C:\Windows\System32\CMD.exe too.

If that also has problems then try the System File Checker that was mentioned earlier.  And look at some of the other earlier suggestions and work through them.

I'm glad your problem is solved.  Am I right in assuming there was no actual problem in the first place but rather your interpretation of what you should be seeing was wrong?

How and where are you opening this Command Prompt?  Is from Normal Mode, Safe Mode, or a Recovery environment?

Have you tested with another Keyboard?  What type of Keyboard are you using, wireless or USB, or an older type?  Can you test with the On Screen Keyboard accessible via  typing osk in the Start Menu RUN box?

Is the Command Prompt that you see showing an actual Prompt, or is it showing just a flashing dash in the top left corner, or is it just an empty black window?

Can you paste text into the window if you first type it into and copy it from Notepad?
