This may be the solution you are seeking.

I recently removed the Vista Recovery Center malware from another one of our company laptops. It has ATI graphics installed. This malware hides most of the files on the PC in an attempt to fool you into thinking that your PC is really damaged like it is reporting. Removing the malware does not undo the hidden aspects. In Vista, the c:\Users*"your profile name (usually Owner)"*  folder contains the AppData subdirectory that the Catalyst Control Center needs to access in order to function. When this directory is hidden, then CCC cannot locate the necessary files to launch. To fix this issue, I use the following steps.

Navigate to c:\ and right click on Users. Select properties. Under the General tab, look at the bottom for the Hidden selection. If there is not a check mark in the box, place a check mark there. Hit apply, select yes to apply to all subdirectories. If you clicked ok, you may notice that it disappeared from the right pane once it finishes. It should still be listed under the tree on the left. Right click on it again. This time remove the check mark and apply to all subdirectories. Once it has finished, your files in the Users directory should reappear and Catalyst Control Center should function normally again. This has worked in all cases that I have encounterd so far. Hopefully this works for you as well..

    Hi landbpeters,

You should be able to download the latest version of the Catalyst Control Center/drivers for your video card from here:

    Hope this helps!

Hi Debra - I realise you are trying to be helpful and I don't want to sound ungrateful, but for IT duffers like me you really need to go a bit further.  Just posting a link and saying "you'll find the answer there" is like you asking a mechanic what to do coz your car has broken down and then the mechanic just tells you to grab the Ford handbook and look at chapter X......

When I click on that link you gave what do I look for?  And what do I click on/do next?

    i.e. an idiot-proof  step-by-step guide please.

    Thanx.

    Rob

    Ahhhh....that's better!

    Fixed this issue.

    Go to:

    Program Files

       ATI

         CIM

            BIN

              ATI Setup

Double click on the ATI Setup. and allow it to run.

It will ask if you want to uninstall/remove/change...whatever..I already forgot!  Duh!

     Say YES

This will uninstall the ATI SOFTWARE ONLY.....NOT the DRIVERS.

My computer did not crash, my display did not revert to 1976, and I now have complete control of my laptop.

So much for overly complicated Microsoft answers.  Win7 does not get along with CCC software but apparently no one will own up...either ATI or MS... so just remove it.

Yes, it would be great to have the software function, but not at the expense of Zero Productivity and all this grief.

And I repeat myself....Debbie, et al....learn how to say "I   DONT   KNOW".  This is akin to "If you don't have something good to say, then don't say anything".  If you don't ACTUALLY KNOW something, then say nothing.

My nasty little post is considered GOOD for all of us poor fools who don't really know that we're doing and look to folks like you for HONEST answers.

I know nothing about software & programming.  I am strictly a copy & paste, monkey see-monkee do...with ME being the head monkey!

This worked for me.  I don't know what will happen to everyone else...because I DON'T KNOW.

I've been struggling with this too. If I add a new user account and switch to that account, the problem goes away. But I can't figure out how to fix it on my original administrator account. Something changed regarding permissions or something in the user account.

Of course the people at Dell had me do all sorts of ridiculous things, most of which I had already tried, then concluded it was a bad video card, which of course it isn't, and wanted me to send the machine back to them.
