original title: WINDOWS 7 DEVICE MANAGER WON'T OPEN

I am trying to open device manager from control panel and get the green progress bar moving slowly across the top, but it never actually finishes and opens device manager.  I am just trying to see my printers, but can't get the DM open.

    Hi johnjjordan,

Do you get any error message when you try opening the device manager?

I would suggest you to check in safe mode if you are able to access device manager. In Safe mode; you have access to only basic files and drivers. Refer to the link to start the computer in safe mode –

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

After booting in safe mode, follow the below steps to open device manager -

    1. Click Start and then click on Run.
    2. Type devmgmt.msc and then click Ok.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

You may even click on Start and type Device Manager****in the search box displayed and check if you are able to open it from the options displayed in start menu window.

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

    Thanks,

    Meghmala – Microsoft Support

I am using Windows 7 Home. I noted my DVD/CD rom would not work so I tied opening Device Manager to check it.    I also cannot get Device Manager to open.  I can't get it to run from the Start: Run .  I cant get it to run from the control panel.   I can't get Device Manager to open in Safe mode.     I keep getting the message:

Navigation to the webpage was canceled

I ran SFC/scannow in Widows Safe mode.  NO errors were reported.

I restored older backups (Aug. 13, 2010) -- still device manager won't work

I've run a virus check.  -- still no device manager, same error above.

There is the file devmgmt.msc in Window/system32 directory.  It is also in a few other locations  on my C: drive.

What do I need to do to get this to work?

    Thanks, David
