converting file format from .odt and .rtf to .doc

Hello,

I am trying to convert .odt and .rtf file formats to .doc format; when the document gets converted to .doc it loses the original formatting. For example, the bullets get converted and  replaced by some different kind of symbol and there is not enough space between the symbol and the text that follows it. It does not look good. Sometimes,  (specially, .rtf formatted  files), the document loses columns from the original documents. (Two column fields become one column field). How do I convert .odt format to .doc format without losing the bullets? I have Windows 7 OS.  Early reply will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

How are you doing the conversion?  I created a document with bullets using Open Office Writer 3.3 and saved it in ODT format.  I then opened it again in Writer and did a File Menu > Save As and saved it as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) and I did not lose the bullets.  Saving in rtf format did lose all but the first bullet in a list but I believe that may be due to what the rtf standard supports.  I didn't test columns between odt and doc formats.

    Hello nightmehta,

I can see there are numerous third party software for converting files and some claim to keep bulletins and other data in order.  But since it is a third party software, we are unable to support it.

Another option could be to download the free 60 day trial of Office 2010, so that you can move your files over.

    Hello,

After saving .odt   into .doc format I am viewing it in OpenOffice Writer.

Other thing is, when I  tried to copy that symbol and paste it here to show you how it looks, that symbol changes to bullet again.

If nothing works then I might have to go somewhere to use Microsoft Word and get my work done.

It should work the way I am converting it,  but it is not doing that. I have spent lot of time after this.

    Thanks.

After you save it to the doc format, what program are you viewing it with (i..e, when you see the other kind of symbol what program is that you are using) -- still in Open Office Writer or something else?

    Hello, FoxFifth

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

I just tried again, after reading your reply to convert .odt to Microsoft Word 97/200/XP/2003 (.doc) under save as type but it did not work, it removed the bullets and replaced it with some other kind

of symbol. Like it has bee doing.  I am unable copy and paste that symbol here to show it to you.

I am trying to save my resume from .odt to .doc format, It is necessary to have bullets in some section of resume. I used to have Microsoft Word on trial basis which expired.

I also have another word processing program similar to Word and OpenOffice 3.3 called

LibreOffice 3.4. This one is also not doing what I want to do. DOC format is more commonly used than ODT format and I want to do my resume in .doc format.

I also tried converter program called Zamzar but that also is not doing good job, text alignment on the document gets messed up and you have to make adjustments.

    Thank you for your time.

    nightmehta
