Hi,
I had the same problem.
I think this will help you.
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Firefly Studios\Stronghold 3\resources\dotNetFx40 and try to install dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe manually. This solved the problem with me.

I just bough the new game from firefly Stronghold 3 installed it on my computer which is reasonably new and ran the updates are signing in to steam but when i try to run the game I get a message that reads 'Failed to initialize the engine' and I go no further. I have tried looking on the web for answers but as the game only came out today in the UK I realise I may simply have to wait a while until anyone finds a solution. I have tried re-installing the game, changing the graphics options on my pc, running in different versions of windows, and I even went through the whole process of updating the graphics drivers but still the same problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks

if u r trying to play the game on a laptop with nVidia Graphics card that supports hybrid switchable technology with intel HD Graphics then this is causing the problem..Go to Device Manager and Disable the intel HD Graphics till the time u play the game...
and now run the Stronghold 3.exe file as administrator or else it will crash under windows 7 64 bit...enjoy...

Hi,
I would suggest you to place the computer in clean boot state and then check whether it helps.
How to troubleshoot problem by performing clean boot in Windows 7:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in Step 7: to reset computer as usual.
And also refer the following Microsoft article and check if it helps.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941208
Note: It applies to Windows 7 as well.
Hope the information is helpful.
