Original title: Blue screen-- Stop 0x124

I have had two abrupt shutdowns within a day of each other. By what I can interpret, it seems like a CPU-related issue. Here's info on both of them:

    Hi,

Check if you encounter the issue in ‘Safe mode’; if safe mode works fine then set the computer to ‘Clean boot’ mode from safe mode to check for software conflicts.

    Step 1:

Refer the following link on how to start the computer in ‘Safe mode’.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    Step 2:

Follow the steps in the link below to set the computer to ‘Clean boot’ state.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: When the troubleshooting is over, do not forget to reset the computer to normal startup. Follow step 7 in the above mentioned article.

    1. Disk check and memory check yielded no errors.
    2. All device drivers, firmware and BIOSes are up to date
    3. System restore did nothing
    4. Since the error seems to arise at random when performing tasks, troubleshooting in safe mode seems dubious.
    5. The restart is my monitor going blank and my system booting normally (except with the safe mode prompts), as if I had pressed my computer's reset button.

    Hi,

    1)    Did the issue re-appear after you tried all the troubleshooting steps provided in my previous post?

    2)    How long does the computer generally take to restart once you turn it on?

The dump file was not present in the location you provided.

    1. These errors began showing up after I had put a new heatsink on my CPU. Thinking it was overclocking causing instability, I set the processor speeds back to default but these errors persisted.
    2. Windows 7 boots just fine, it will just randomly stop with this error.

both minidump files are in Skydrive now, in a single .zip archive

    Hi,

    1)    Do you remember making any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

    2)    Are you able to boot to the operating system?

This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).

It would be helpful for us to identify the problem if you could upload the dump file.

You can use the Sky-drive to upload the dump file, refer the following link for the steps on how to upload file to Sky-drive. The location of the dump file is ‘C:\Windows\Minidump\’.

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65

You can try the following methods and check if it helps

    Method 1:

    Check your drive for errors

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

IMPORTANT: Performing this task could cause loss of data on your computer. It is recommended that you back up all the data and files prior to performing this.

    Method 2:

To diagnose memory problem on the computer run the Memory Diagnostic tool

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

    Method 3:

Resolving stop (blue screen) errors in Windows 7

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Resolving-stop-blue-screen-errors-in-Windows-7

    Method 4:

    Update all device drivers
