how to turn off sound on start up?

When I boot up under my account, the startup sound is annoying at best and I want to turn it off. However, did look at help and searched (and tested) each sound, but cannot find it. When my husband boots up, he does not get this sound, only I have that sound. Looked under "user accounts," cannot find anything that allows me to customize the preferences of each account. I've tried this several times - going crazy so someone please help me!! What the heck am I missing here? Thanks for helping me out...whoever you are! - Marie

    Hi,

Try Checking the Play Windows StartUp Sounds - APPLY / OK. Then go back and uncheck

    it APPLY/ OK.

These work on XP and should work on Vista and Windows 7 though I have not used them

    on either.

You can use Auto Mute to make sure the sound is OFF or Muted when you boot up.

    Auto Mute - Free

    SetVol should work as well

    SetVol - Free

    And

    SetVol

What you suggested is what I have already tried. The strange part is the sound that my computer makes when I boot up is NOT listed on the sounds tab at all. I have tested/played each sound and none of them is what I am hearing. The shut down sound is the strangest part of all - sounds like an automated voice "groaning." And I do not have the windows start up sound checked on the sound tab. What the heck am I missing?

Thanks for your help...I really appreciate it!

    Hi,

Control Panel - Sound - Sounds tab - Programs box - test/check the System Start and others

to see which sound it is. Either disable the offending one or replace its .wav file to a new sound.

There is also a box that you can uncheck to Not Play the Windows StartUp sound.

Right click desktop > personalize > sounds. If you use a different theme then the sound scheme might be different so you could change the sound scheme to "windows default." If you still want to remove the startup sound then uncheck "Play windows startup sound." If it was not the startup sound that you were talking about then scroll until you find Windows Logon and click it. Press the test button to hear it. To disable click on the arrow box with the word Sounds above it and scroll all the way up and click none. Apply and OK.
