windows 7 Installshield Problems

I'm having difficulty trying to install some software with Windows 7 with SP1. I actually already have the software installed and working in trial mode, but due to an activation problem, the manufacturer has asked me to reinstall it, using a fresh download they provided. When I try to install it, I get an Installshield  "1628 Failed to complete installation" error. If I try to use Control Panel to uninstall the original installation, it launches Installshield and I get the same installation error message, not an uninstall message. I have also tried to install from the dvd disc I have that was used for the original installation and I get the same error. I've tried turning off the firewall and antivirus. Tried ensuring was running as administrator. Tried installing with safe mode too.

I had found in one forum about checking the program files\common files\Installshield\Driver to see what version existed there are compare it to the properties of the setup file I was trying to install from. The driver file was showing version 10 and the software was showing Installshield version 12. I wasn't able to determine the version being used from the dvd. The best Installshield version download I could find was 11 and that made no difference (if this even has anything to do with it, because if I remove the driver completely, I don't get any different messages). I don't know if it would have been from other software that was installed after my initial installation (explaining the version 10?) that is causing the problem or from a Windows update?

Please help.

Thanks.

    Hi ktmrider,

This error message is caused by the Windows Installer Service and is often caused by the installation itself.

    Perform the following troubleshooting methods:

    Method 1:

In the Windows Task Manager, end the process that is running IDriver.exe:

    a.      Right-click the Windows Task bar, then click Task Manager.

    b.      On the Processes tab, click the Image Name column to sort it alphabetically.

    c.       Review the running processes to see if idriver.exe is running.

    d.      If idriver.exe is running, click it or right-click it, then click End Process.

    e.      Run the installation again to see if the error still occurs.

    Method 2:

If that doesn’t work I would suggest you to delete all the temporary files and then try to install the application.

Follow the steps to clear the temp folder:

    a.      Click on the Start button and in the Search bar type in %temp% and hit ENTER.

    b.      When the Temp folder opens up, press Ctrl + A and then press Delete.

Now try to install the application.

    Method 3:

If that doesn’t work I would suggest you to use any cleanup utility provided by the application manufacturer to uninstall the previous version  and check how it works.

    Method 4:

If that doesn’t work, I would suggest you to check the Event viewer to find what the exact issue is and which application causing the issue.

You can refer the below link to check the event viewer.

What information appears in event logs (Event Log Viewer)?
