How do I stop my computer from freezing during disk defragment?

When trying to run  disk defragmenter, my pc freezes when the defrag reaches 3%, on the file wucltui.dll.mui . I've downloaded the Microsoft Fix It software, which stopped the computer from freezing when compressing old files during a disk clean-up ("compress old files" isn't even an option anymore when doing a disk clean-up). The problem was significantly greater a while back, freezing anytime there were too many programs running. I've done a lot of work on it, trying to get it back to normal, and while it's capable of multi-tasking again, I still can't free up any space with the Disk Defrag. I've tried just about everything....starting in safe mode and shutting down all firewalls and updates, I tried turning off System Restore and running defrag again. I've ran "chkdsk" to no avail. I've downloaded registry cleaners, manually cleaned out unnecessary files, and so much more. I don't know what to do anymore but I need this defrag to work. PLEASE HELP ME!

I just discovered this problem on my husbands HP Compaq, don't know where it came from! When I analyze it said it doesn't need to be defraged, and I am not about to reinstall XP! He has 65% of free space left, the only thing he really does on it is play poker on NLOP, and look at the sports junk! NLOP runs with Micro$ .net framework and they just upgraded their site, could this have caused the problem?

Can someone please come up with a better answer???

I just lost my whole C: drive on my Desktop, and had to take it in, now it's and E: drive! Something to do with "XP Media Center Edition" that does it, personally I think it's the inept Tech that didn't know what he was doing because he forgot to install my Audio drivers and it is lucky that I had the files saved somewhere else, so I installed them myself! Mine is a Dell.

What would cause this to happen in the first place???

EDIT:

Just did

Chkdsk, I did some more reading, and it worked, I am now past that spot for now!

Looks like you may have a bad Hard Drive.

Use the CHKDSK utility in cmd to test your hard drive for any bad sectors.

You have no better idea than to reinstall XP?

Is that really the best a Microsoft Support Engineer can come up with for troubleshooting this problem - just reinstall XP?

It does not matter to you that the KB says:

Reinstalling the Windows operating system or performing an in-place upgrade of your operating system is an extreme troubleshooting step that you should only take if you fully understand the ramifications and risks involved.

Does it not matter that JCAngel is not describing any symptoms consistent with a need to reinstall XP (according to the article)?

At least you posted a link to a Microsoft KB article.  If nothing good happens, that will at least get you an "Answer" in a few days.
