Installing Microsoft Picture it! Publishing Platinum 2001 on Windows 7

I LOVE Microsoft Picture it!.  There is no other product out there that allows you to edit, crop, enhance photos and make a variety of products like business cards, flyers, announcements etc.

But I purchased a new computer and it came with Windows 7.  I installed the program but it won't open up.  Says "it has experience an error and windows will close and look for a solution for the error".  I'm thinking perhaps the program isn't compatible with Windows 7.

Does anyone have a method to install Microsoft Picture it! on Windows 7.  If so, I would love to know what I can do to get this installed.  I have hundreds of projects I have completed and now I can't access any of them--nor credit new ones.

Thanks to anyone who can help on this.  Thanks

    Compatibility

Do you have the newest version of the software? Some older programs/versions may not work in Windows 7.

If not check with the program maker if they have any updates or patches for the software.

Windows 7 Compatibility Center to check program compatibility:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

    Troubleshoot Compatibility

This can help with some (but not all) programs:

    1. Uninstall the program if it's already installed. Then when you install/reinstall it instead of double clicking on the install file right click it and select "Troubleshoot Compatibility"
    2. Then click "Try Recommended Settings" and in the next windows click "Start the Program" to install it.
    3. After it installs see if it works correctly. Please note - some programs may not be able to run in windows 7.

More details about how to make older programs run in this version of Windows:

Microsoft Picture IT is not compatible with Windows 7. Microsoft's Picture IT has been discontinued and has been replaced with Windows Live Photo Gallery. You may download Windows Live Photo Gallery for free and install it on Windows 7.

    Windows Live Photo Gallery:

You can also use the built in photo editing program Paint. To open Paint click the Start button, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Paint.

Two popular free photo editors with many features are linked to below - between the two programs Paint.NET will be more user friendly.

I have used Microsoft Picture-It 2001 since it was first released on my XP Professional OS. When I moved to Windows7, the program allows you to install it but as most of you have discovered there is a compatibility issue. The recommended compatibility is to Run as administrator and select the option for XP Service Pack 2. I tried this as well as all the others including XP Service pack3 and not will work.

The program will execute and load the design file (.mix). However, if you attempt to add a file to your workspace window....then you get the message Picture-it has stopped working. I doubt seriously if it will ever work for any of us.

I also have Microsoft Picture-It Photo Premium 7 and it will work. It will also open & load the older 2001 (.mix) files and when you save the design for later use or changes, it is saved in the native design format for ver 7.0 as "Picture It Plus Png"  (.png).  In a nutshell this is basically what you would do if the older version 2001 were compatiable.

The only thing I cannot do with version 2001 as a program in Windows 7 is to add a file from my computer or save in a format other than its native design formation (.mix). I suspect Picture It Photo Version 7 may still be available for sale if you check the internet for a supplier.
