Delete card reader drivers and re-install them

My Windows 7 64 stopped recognizing my usb card reader which is connected to the motherboard. I tried to use another usb card reader plugged into a usb port and that reader did not work, but it will work with another computer. I can plug any other device in the usb port and they will work. How do I delete the driver for the card readers and re-install it.

    Hi Mike,

Okay, I've done some reasearch for you by simply going to the Sony support site here: http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/36#faq

Is that one of your card readers?

It lists a bunch of different options you can try for troubleshooting this individual device, and I suspect you have the ability to search that site for your other model card reader.

However, since it sounds like the only issues you are having are with Sony products, and both of these products do not require additional drivers (info from the link above) then I would suggest updating your current Windows drivers.

To do this, click the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of your desktop. Then search for Windows Update and run it. Hopefully this will clear up the issue.

One last thing you can try, again coming directly from the Sony support site, is using the software that came with the device. I would suggest reading the entire support page for your products as it may offer some useful information, especially in the Windows Update does not do the trick.

    Hi

I guess I don't understand. Did you even read my last post,

As I said in my previous reply:

"ALL OF MY OTHER USB divices work."

My 3 printers, 2 scanners, trackball, keyboard, all of my flash drives, 6 external harddrives,

my phone, and anything else I have ALL WORK on any port I plug them into.

I am sorry I did not list EVERYTHING before.

So how would the BIOS pick out the card readers to NOT WORK.

I also said, ln the VERY FIRST line:

"I noticed it about 3 weeks ago, after over a year of working."

That being said, I would think that says that the card readers WERE WORKING before.

But to answer your question all three card readers were Sony's.

    Portable model #: MRW62E

    2 Internal model #: MRW620/U1/181

As I have said THE CARD READERS HAVE BEEN WORKING.

    Hi,

Have you checked to make sure the USB Functions are all enabled in the computer's BIOS menu? Also, please tell us the make and model of the card reader as you might need specified drivers from the manufacturer themselves.

I noticed it about 3 weeks ago, after over a year of working.

I went out and bought another internal card reader and

plugged it to the motherboard usb socket. It did not work. I plugged it in another motherboard

usb socket, it still did not work. I got my external card reader and plugged it in all of my open

usb ports and it did not work. I took the external reader and plugged it in 2 other computers

and it work just fine. I opened the device manager and under the usb contorllers there is a

yellow triangle next to unknown device. I uninstalled it and restarted my computer and had it

look for new devices. It found it but it still would not work. I downloaded Microsofts "Fix-it"

and it said it fixed the problem and to restart my computer, the card reader still did not work.

ALL OF MY OTHER USB divices work.Since this problem IS ONLY WITH CARD READERS

I can only assume that the drivers for card readers is corrupt. I have tried to re-install and

update the drivers and it says that the most current driver is installed. I am guessing that if I

delete the driver it will install a new driver that is not corrupted, but I am not sure which one,

or where it is to delete it. Or am I wrong in thinking that.

    Thanks

    Mike

    Hi,

    ·          When did the issue start?

Step 1: Run the hardware and device troubleshooter:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter

Step 2: Remove and reinstall all USB controllers:

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:

    a.     Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

    b.     Click the Hardware tab.

    c.     Click the Device Manager Button.

    d.     Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

    e.     Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.

    f.      Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers by clicking on scan for hardware changes.

    g.     Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.
