My computer has 'apple software update' on the start button, should I be worried? Do I need it or can I delete it? It didn't have it before. Thanks for any help.

This is Apple's own Software Update mechanism, similar to Windows Update for Apple software installed on your computer such as iTunes, QuickTime, Safari and even Apple hardware such as their 'i' devices.

Personally, I find it easier to use if you have multiple Apple applications installed, it streamlines updating all of them. You can ignore it if you want and manually update Apple applications, especially if you want to keep a copy of the installer for future use.

It is update that will appear if you install any Apple product such as iTune and since update will fix bug and improve security and reliability of software, it recommended that it keep running. But I believe there should be some settings that you could manage for update of Apple software.
