I can't access Windows Update using Windows 2000

Hi,

My mom's computer has the Windows 2000 operating system. She has Internet Explorer 5 and I can't access any Microsoft website including Windows Update. Any other website IS accessible. The Automatic Updates icon on the control panel is shaded and does not allow me to make changes [and I am in an Administrator account].

The computer has no updates and was used for many years without Internet. It is used for billing purposes for her job. Since her job requires for her to install a new program she needs the updates. The new program makes it a requirement to have NET Framework 3.5 to set up the system upgrade for billing.

So I need to know how I can first do Windows Updates for Windows 2000 and later how to install NET Framework 3.5. Everything is old and there is no NET framework of any kind on it.

Someone with knowledge please help me. Even just the steps to have Windows Updates for 2000 would be appreciated.

Thanks

    see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260910

Updates and fixes to Microsoft Windows 2000 are distributed in service packs.

Support for Windows 2000 ends on July 13, 2010

As you can see, your system appears to be a little outdated, perhaps look at a new computer.

System requirements for 3.5 .NET Framework :

Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=22

So if your mother's job requires .NET Framework, then she'll need to upgrade her computer.

The above are things to consider.

    TaurArian,

This most certainly was a bad experience for me. Not only do you push Microsoft products and shove them down my face but you refer me to a store.

It's obvious Microsoft prefers to make more money than to have their loyal customers with updates even from old systems like Windows 2000. Not everyone is loaded with money or rich.

As per this discussion, first of all there IS a way to install Net Framework 3.5 on a Windows 2000 operating system. I have seen the resolution myself and if anyone googles the question they can see for themselves.

Secondly, for a Windows 2000 Operating System windows updates can be accomplished. And furthermore, to upgrade to Windows XP from a Windows 2000 is extremely simple and possible despite the memory you mention. My computer has less than 2 pentium and less memory and I was able to do it.

Your comments are all based on referring me to BUY MORE and as a person who was seeking help with the issue of update and NET Framework you did not resolve my problem in the best way.

Let me add, you did not answer my questions on the Automatic Updates not working on Microsoft Baseline Analyzer.

    TaurArian,

You obviously work at Microsoft. From pushing customers to buy new products, to sending to read articles, to giving them negativity on upgrading and negativity on NET Framework installs, and negativity on updates from Windows 2000.

    minimum requirements : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865

Which means minimum not recommended. You should not consider running XP under 1 gig of ram IMHO.

The version of Windows XP SP2 - is it an upgrade or full version?

There could be many problems upgrading Win2000 to WinXP not to mention the age of the equipment. Would it not been more beneficial to purchase a new computer rather than trying to upgrade a really old computer.

    also see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

IMHO, buy a new computer. The choice is yours. By the time you try and upgrade your ram, your hard drive if appropriate and video card ........

<edit> You will also need to consider the progams your mum is running and whether they need to be upgraded etc.

    TaurArian nice to meet you!

Since my mom's job requires NET Framework then I will try to have her upgrade her computer. Can I do an upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP SP2? I ask because I have the software in a box and I've never used it.

RESOLUTION UPDATE: I did some investigation myself and NET Framework can be put on Windows 2000. Furthermore, to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP is fairly simple.
