Windows XP SP3, media edition ver 2002

wfp window opened reported problem with system files

preloaded software from dell, do not have the XP professional cd disk 2 requested to install in cd drive.

I do have the operating system disc dell provided, and drivers and utitilies disk.

I would like to run sfc to find problem, and run sfc /scannow to try and resolve problem.

Can I do this from run window, or do I need to open cmd prompt, or do sometime at startup to perform

correction action?? Hope my question is clear, appreciate any help as I am unsure and do not want to

create more problems. Thanks

    Hi,

Let us first run the sfc scan and check if there are any system file corruptions.

    a. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

    b. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannowThe sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

More Information about SFC scan can be found in this document:

How about starting your own new question with a meaningful subject line and a description of your problem rather than tacking on to a thread that's over 2 years old (and has bad advice, to boot)?

It's not surprising that running sfc /scannow didn't help you.  That command doesn't do what that Microsoft-engaged answerer thinks it does.

sapi.cpl is the control panel applet for Windows text-to-speech.  It's one of the files protected by the Windows File Protection system, so it would be a bit unusual for the file to have become corrupted.

Include in your new question at least the following information:

    • The version of Windows you have, including service pack (right click My Computer and select Properties for this information)
    • Whether you have Automatic Updates enabled or otherwise ensure that your system receives all important Windows updates
    • The name and version of your antivirus program and whether you have kept it up to date
    • What other "security" software you have installed, including any registry cleaners, tuners, tweakers or the like that you may have used
    • What you are attempting to do when the error arises

    Thanks for the heads up.

    XP service pack 3

Auto update configured and is working fine

Norton 360 - up to date since install - We have 10 computers and lap tops all running fine.

A shampoo - winoptimizer10 and more recently RegCure - which fixed several issues we were having.

I use foreign language translation software on this computer and another laptop.

IM translator portal - when I installed it on my laptop I had all kinds of problems - which we solved by finally getting rid of the software and and some other downloads and cleaning up the system and updating the operating system to Windows XP service pack 3, from an older version.

On the desktop I am having trouble with now.  I use Babylon software, which was updated by a newer version, in order to get it to work I updated IE to version 7.

However, now I have no speech activation, lost it some where along the line.

Control panel reveals the following message:

an exception occurred while trying to run "C:Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\Microsoft\Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl",Speech"

I have removed the Babylon software completely, same problem.

ran sfc /scannow, and repaired XP by running an update from a newer version of XP Service pack 3 which solved some other problems (svchost.exe using too much memory, and ms update) but that is completely resolved.

The foregoing is the only problem not resolved.

    Thank You
