No problems whatsoever if you use Hamrick's VUESCAN
I run this scanner with Windows 7 64-bit. Great!
I can find nowhere that indicates there are drivers for Windows 7. If you had the Professional or Ultimate edition of Windows 7, you might have been able to get it to work in Windows XP compatibility mode. See http://www.techgeekandmore.com/2010/05/16/hp-scanjet-5300-scanning-windows-7-xp-drivers-missing-tgm-q-a-noel-how-to/. Since you're not, you should be able to run XP in VMware Player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) or you can run Microsoft's Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx). Even though Microsoft's web site says you need Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate, posts in other forums say you can run it on Windows 7 Home Premium. Just tell the download you have Windows 7 Professional.
