USB Wizard won't automatically install flash/usb drives

Hello,

Working on a laptop, I have a strange problem. Inserting a usb device (flash/usb hard drives are all that I have tested) brings up the Install new hardware wizard.

If I choose "Install the software automatically", the wizard always fails. If I pick "Install from a list or specific location", then choose c:\windows\inf as the location, it always works. Shouldn't the wizard be checking this location on it's own?

Things I've tried:

  • Reinstalling the USB devices in device manager

- Microsoft Fix it 50052

Gateway Laptop, MX6441

Windows MCE

Service Pack 3

All important updates installed

Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi,

It seems that Windows somehow loses USBSTOR.xxx files from the C:\Windows\INF folder. You can simply copy them from (C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3) to C:\Windows\INF and this might fix the issue.
