Why does my Windows Media Center system tray icon appear occasionally but go away when I click on it?

Every once in a while when I look down at the system tray my Windows Media Center icon will appear. When I click on it, it disappears. I don't know what it's trying to tell me. I have the icon set to only show notifications, yet it periodically shows the icon but no notification. Any idea what it's trying to tell me? I have auto updates on, bye the way.

I believe it shows because of updates. However, when I hover on the icon nothing happens. When I right click I get a short menu showing auto update is on. When I left click, the icon disappears with no message. It seems to come and go by itself. What makes me curious is that in the system tray icon menu I have specified to hide the icon and show notifications, yet it shows the icon and hides the notifications.

    Hi,

Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

The Windows Media Center icon may disappear when there are updates to be installed related to media center. Check for installed updates for confirmation related to same.

I would suggest you to run System File Checker tool (SFC) scan and check if it helps.

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

And also check if bringing the cursor on the icon brings some message like "installing media center updates"

Hope the information is helpful; please reply to us if the issue persists
