Not sure if you're still monitoring this thread, but I have the answer for you. After a lot of searching myself, I found that all you need to do is simply enable the USB streaming on your camcorder. I just did it and now my Win7 machine recognizes my camcorder (the same one you have). Do this by: press menu button, scroll down to "Setup Menu", select "USB Stream" and turn it on. That simple.
Windows 7 and Sony Handycam USB Transfer
Hello All - new to video transfer and editing. I have a rather old Sony HandyCam Digital8 DCR-TRV350 and am trying to transfer video via the USB port onto my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. I am getting a message saying the driver is not found but various sites say the driver should be part of the Windows7 OS. I have also seen that the USB does not work but have also seen that it does. Any advice for the newbie would be greatly appreciated!!

2012-02-01T22:50:00+00:00 I use windows movie maker to capture video from a dcr-hc48 via usb on XP and it works perfectly. Same combo on windows 7 64bit does not work because sony has and will not port the usb driver for windows 7 64 bit. I think I read somewhere that there is a sony usb driver for windows 7 32bit.

2012-01-06T03:26:30+00:00 You might be able to download a trial version of some video editing software just to give it a try before buying something.
Also, if you were accustomed to using Windows Movie Maker with Win XP, then that version of Movie Maker does have the option to import video from a camcorder (just verified that today with an old computer I had sitting around that still had XP on it...), but the version that you get with Win 7 apparently does not.
Anyway, I hope this has been at least somewhat helpful.

2010-04-26T00:01:25+00:00 Hi,
We don’t have any information about Sony HandyCam’s compatibility with windows 7. I would suggest you to download old Sony cam driver/software from Sony's website and install it in compatibility mode.
Steps to run the Program Compatibility troubleshooter:
- Open the Program Compatibility troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Programs, click Run programs made for previous versions of Windows.
- Follow the instructions in the troubleshooter.
