Shift + Insert does not paste any more

I bought an Hj Pavilion dv7-6168nr yesterday (12-12-2011).  The 'paste' function comprised of 'shift + insert' has been around as long as I've been around.  It either does not work with Windows 7 or HP laptops.  HP customer support had me restart, 'esc' to BIOS/Setup and press the 'shift + insert' to see if it would make a beeping sound.  It did not.  They asked me to return the laptop to the store.  I did that today.  I'm now on the 2nd new laptop with the same problem.  Several posts indicate that 'ctl

  • v' is actually paste.  That is fine, but what happened to 'shift + insert' that has been available since I was a child?

Update:  HP tells me that this is a feature of Windows 7, that the 'shift + insert' function was disabled by Microsoft.  Anybody else wondering why they would do this?

    Hi Bob

Testing this on a Dell Desktop and Laptop, the Shift+Insert works on both computers.

I found the following information on the HP Notebook Forums.

Found out that the insert key requires shift+function+insert.

HP PAVILION DV6-3050ca shift + insert. How? - HP Support Forum:

It appears that this is a problem with the HP laptop keyboard driver.

    Regards

EVERYONE -- the real "ins" key located along with "prt sc" DOES INFACT WORK.  You just need to makesure that NUM LOCK is OFF!

    TA DA!

Update:  HP tells me that this is a feature of Windows 7, that the 'shift + insert' function was disabled by Microsoft.  Anybody else wondering why they would do this?

The original keyboard shortcuts for Copy (e.g. Ctrl+Ins), Cut (e.g. Shift+Del) and Paste (e.g. Shift+Ins) have been around since at least the days of Windows 1.0's rudimentary GUI or MS-DOS' Edit command and still work quite well in many programs. I just tried them in Notepad, Word and Excel and all three shortcuts worked as expected. I'm using Windows 7 Pro but I don't see why this would be different with any other Windows edition Some programs appear to have overwritten this functionality in favor of new-fangled keyboard combinations. It is possible that HP's keyboard driver has been written to remove the functionality in favor of some other purpose. Is it possible to try another standard keyboard plugged in or connected via wireless?

In my own experience, I resisted the move to Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V until the powers that be rearranged the Ins key far enough away from the Shift and Ctrl keys that you needed to be able to palm a basketball before you could use the keystroke combinations with one hand, but I'm happily transitioned now.
