Original title: Streets & Trips 2011 with GPS Locator install problem

I am trying to install Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 with GPS Locator from DVD and it fails very early in the install.  My environment is an HP 8560w Elite Workbook running Win 7 Prof and Microsoft Office 2010 Professional (8GB of memory, 500GB disk space).

Let me stress that  I will not be plugging the GPS stick into a USB port until the install process or the the installed software calls for it.  The install starts with the display:

"Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 requires the installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable. To install the component now, click OK. If you want to stop the installation and exit Setup, click Cancel."

I clicked OK to proceed with the install. Another message was displayed:

"Please wait while the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable is installed."

After a fairly brief delay, a final message was displayed:

"One of the prerequisite components failed to install. Setup will now exist."

I check my installed programs list in Programs and Features and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable is already installed, listed as:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable - Version 10.0.40219

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable - Version 10.0.40219

I've tried to run the install several times but it always fails and ends at the same point.

What must I do to successfully install Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 with GPS Locator?

    I thank everyone for their input on my captioned problem.

    As I indicated in one of my earlier replies to myself, for me, this problem is closed now.  Microsoft Support accepted my MS Streets & Trips w/ GPS for a full refund.  At least, the support staff I spoke to acknowledged that ST2011 was known to be incompatible with W7P SP1 and they offered the full refund.

    A number of the replies I received offered possible solutions that I had tried and said so in previous updates to this thread (e.g., running the install from the data.msi on the install CD).  While I still had possession of the ST2011 software, I was not made aware of the Microsoft reset tool mentioned by Mike L. Robbins so I can't say whether that would get me through my installation problems.  So be it, everything was send back to Microsoft.

    I can only hope that if Microsoft releases Streets & Trips 2012 that is does not inherit the problems I experienced.  I consider this thread to be closed now.  Thank you all.

    Certainly continue to reply to this topic if others might benefit from your proposed solutions to ST2011 installs.

    My solution to the 0x80070005 error was to do this:

    Start -> Type "cmd" -> Right click on cmd.exe and select "Run As Administrator"

    Type the following, pressing enter after every line.

    e: (this is the drive letter of your installation media)

    cd MapPoint --OR-- cd Streets (this depends on whether you're installing MapPoint or Streets & Trips)

    cd MsMap

    data.msi

    Follow the install prompts as normal.  You can hit "reinstall" if it previously failed.

    Once it is done, you can run MapPoint as normal!

    If it installs, but still won't run.  Try this, Start, right click on icon, Properties, Compatibility, toggle Run A Administrator.  Worked for me.  Got this from phone tech supp.

    Let me start my follow-up reply to update the information in my original post elsewhere here.

    In addition to Microsoft Visual C++ 2010, the install for Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 with GPS Locator (ST2011) also forces the update of Microsoft Access database engine 2010. On my machine (HP 8560w Elite Workstation, Win7 Pro, 64-bit), the update to Microsoft Access database engine 2010 was successful every time I've tried to run the install for ST2011.

    I followed the steps provided by the Support Engineer and, I believe, the instructions were only inaccurate in one respect. The instructions called for me to install the software listed according to whether my SYSTEM is 32-bit or 64-bit. In the case of ST2011, this software is a 32-bit only application and I'm pretty sure that only the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable module would be involved. I ended up running the 'repair' option for the x86 module and also the x64 module. With every combination of 'repair'. I could not get the install for ST2011 past the update to Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable. Every time it would fail with the messages I listed in my original post.

    I proceeded to uninstall both the x86 and x64 modules for Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable then, after rebooting, I ran Windows Update to reinstall these modules up to the Service Pack 1 level. Again trying to install ST2011, I still fail at the same point as before.

    At this point, I've run a system restore to the point BEFORE I ever tried to install ST2011 the first time, and rerun Windows Update to re-apply the few last security updates. I've run the 'repair' updates to x86 and x64 modules of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable and run the ST2011 install again and all I get is the failed results I've already listed.

    I ask for any more help I can get from Microsoft Support to get me through this problem. I thought I had purchased a straight-forward mapping with GPS product and this is becoming a 2nd job just to get the thing installed.

    Hi,

    Try to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 updates, if you continue to experience the issue then uninstall and re-install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1.

    If you are working on a 32-bit operating system, install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

    If you are working on a 64-bit operating system, install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)
