Original Title:  Event ID10010

I get Event ID10010 Error. "Server did not register with DCOM within the required timeout". This occurs at about 3 minutes after switch on but not every time I switch on, it happened 12 times in the last month. Checking on the Registry indicates that it is caused by C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\wmiprvse.exe-secured. It does not appear to have any adverse effect on the computer. I have an HP Pavilion desktop running Windows XP with SP3. How can I stop it. Lengthen the allowed timeout?

    Hi,

    ·         Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?

    ·         Is your computer connected to any domain network?

I would suggest you to reset default DCOM permissions.

How to reset the default DCOM permissions

    a.       Click Start and select Run, type dcomcnfg, and press Enter.

    b.      Expand Componet Services\Computers, right-click My Computer and select Properties.

    c.       In the Default Distributed COM Communication Properties section of Default Properties tab, make sure that:

Default Authentication Level is set to Connect

Default Impersonation Level is set to Identify

" Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?".

Do you realize how absurd that question is?

People are here asking you questions for support and you ask them questions such as this?

What do you think? I would take an educated guess and say yes. They, someone else or windows updates and 3rd party patching and software would certainly have made changes to the system "prior to the issue".

If you don't have a definitive answer for this issue it's best you don't give out any suggestions unless you have come across this issue and have resolved it with your suggestion on more than one occasion.

Thank you for the useful reply. I followed your advice to reset the default DCOM permissions however the settings were on Connect and Identify already.

While looking at the Component Services screen I clicked on DCOM Config and got a box headed DCOM Configuration Warning:

The CLSID{1F87137D-0E7C-44d5-8C73-4EFFB68962F2}, item C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe and title Microsoft WMI Provider Subsystem Secured Host has the named value AppID, but is not recorded under \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT|AppId. Do you wish to record it? Yes/No

This seems to be related to my problem. I clicked "No" as I wanted to take your advice before changing anything. I then got a second DCOM Configuration Warning:

The CLSID {D566C102-0B3D-11D6-B55D-00A02442C845}, item c:\PROGRA~1\HP\DIGITA~1\DocProc\dpe_ocr.exe and title DocProcEngine Class has the named value AppID, but it is not recorded under \\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppId. Do you wish to record it? Yes/No

    Again I clicked "No".

I started getting Event ID 10010 Errors some months ago and there have been many changes to my computer since then.

I don't understand your question " Is your computer connected to any domain network?" My computer is connected by WiFi to my broadband network at switch on.

It looks as if I should click "Yes" to both the above questions. Do you agree?

Thanks for comments in last post, they were helpful.

    I've cracked it! - I think!

About 4 months ago I downloaded a small software package (called Gummy Stuff) which downloaded share prices from the Yahoo Finance site on the web. It was freeware written by an enthusiastic self-confessed amateur. I got it working and was happy with it. A couple of months ago I thought it would be a good idea if I added a few lines in the Visual Basic program so that it looped back every minute to give me (almost) up to date share prices. This seemed to work fine. However I have now found that every time I run the program a new "Connection" is created. When I looked in Data - Connections the list had hundreds of entries. I conclude that there were so many entries taking a long time so that - "The Server did not register with DCOM within the timeout required". As you say above " when XP is starting up Services and things may start up at different time or take more or less time depending on what is happening during the startup process - not everything is going to be "ready" all at the same time or instantly". This explains why I didn't get the error on every start up.

I deleted all of the connections and I have not had an Event ID 10010 Error since. That is for the last 6 days. I would like to see this continuing for another week before I get too excited!

Finally, I have written an extra line in the VB code so that the connection is deleted immediately after each download. This is not a very elegant solution but it seems to work. I am not very knowledgeable in writing VB.

Hopefully, in about a week I will feel confident that the problem is solved and I will then add a final(?) post to this thread.

Many thanks for all the help and advice.

I have returned to DCOM Config screen referred to in my last post above. I clicked "Yes" on each of boxes. Both boxes then reappeared and I clicked "Yes" to each again. They did not reappear but when I closed the screen and then reopened it they were there again. Clicking "Yes" does not solve the problem. Any more suggestions?

I looked at the web reference in the last post. I am not comfortable to change settings in the registry. I would prefer to live with my problem which occurs about 12 times a month and doesn't seem to affect performance. There must be an easier way.

I feel that it is unlikely that it is caused by a permissions problem as it doesn't happen after every switch on. Last month it happened 12 times and I probably switched on about 90 times.
