Bootup occasionally stuck on BIOS screen.

Hello,

My computer has an odd problem that usually occurs when I first boot it up for the day (after it has been turned off for a few hours or overnight). When the BIOS screen displays, it gets stuck on "Initializing USB controllers . .". If I wait a few minutes and boot again it may or may not boot correctly. When it does not boot correctly again it will get stuck on:

"Initializing USB Controllers . . Done.

4096MB OK

USB Device(s) : 1 Hub

Auto-Detecting SATA1 Device . . ATAPI CDROM:TSScorp CDVD

Auto-Detecting SATA2 Device . . IDE Hard Disk: WDC WD3200AA

Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage Devices . .

Device 01:"

If I disconnect all my USB devices I have plugged in and boot it once more, it will boot correctly. Although when I plug in my USB devices afterwards, they cannot be recognized. When I shut down when I see this problem it will take a longer time to shut down along with a blue screen crash saying:

"A problem has been detected and windows have been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER"

Eventually after some boots I am able to have it running correctly, but this problem is a bit of an annoyance since I do use my computer frequently.

If it matters, my bios information is "AMIBIOS (C) 2006 American megatrends, Inc. / A760G M2+ (A76GM505 BF) BIOS Date: 05/05/09". Also, what I usually have plugged into the USB ports is an external hard drive (Western Digital), wireless internet adapter (Netgear Wireless N 150 USB Adaptor), and a USB headset (Plantronics).

I will appreciate any help that is given. If there is any other information that I may have not provided that may aid in helping anyone help me fix this problem, I am more than willing to provide it.

Thanks.

This isn't a Windows problem per se. Any error generated by BIOS happens before Windows starts up.

So, if the machine boots with no USB hardware connected, do the following.

Boot the machine with just one USB device attached. Do this with each USB device in turn, and use a different USB port each time. Eventually, you will dicover which USB device and/or USB port is causing the grief.

If it is a USB port, you will need to buy a PCI USB card and use it inplace of the integrated ports. If it one of the devices, replace the device..

Hi,

In addition to Mike's advices you may also want to update your BIOS to its latest release.

As you make no mention about your motherboard's make and model I cannot tell whether you have the latest one or not.

Carlos
