I'm trying to download a library book & need a program to open an acsm file.  Are there any available that I don't have to pay to clean my registry files?

    Just to add clarification:

A .acsm file is a "Adobe Content Server Message File." It can be opened by Adobe Digital Editions.

There is a free Digital Editions 1.7.2 installer that can be downloaded  from the Adobe website.

    http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/?PID=3081440

NOTE: Even if you have a different eReader software other than Digital Editions, such as Kobo Desktop, you may still receive an ACSM file when downloading an eBook. However, you still must install Adobe Digital Editions to download the eBook and then it can be read and transferred to your eReader device.

    Hope this helps.

2016 it doesn't work.  i guess they changed things.  here's a sample such file in notepad++

You'll see there is no '<src>' in it as such.  Trying different things I haven't been able to make it work.

    Hi,

Actually the ACSM is a kind of XML file and it contains a download link to the actual ebook. If you are willing to do a little bit of plumbing, you can get the URL of the download out of this file.

Download URL is within <src> tags near the end of this XML file:

    e.g. <src>THE URL IS HERE</src>.

Open ACSM file with notepad. Find "<src>" (Edit > Find...). Select the URL between <src> and </src>. Copy it (Edit > Copy) and paste it in a browser. The epub file (the ebook) will be downloaded.

If it is not DRM-protected, you can open it in a few ebook-reader apps. If it's 'DRM-protected (it most probably will be), then you need your ebook vender's reader app or device to open the file and read the book.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,

The ACSM file type you are trying to open is associated with Adobe and you may have to contact Adobe to know more details about ACSM files.

However, you may try to open the files using Adobe reader.

You can download Adobe Reader from the link mentioned below:

    Adobe Reader X (10.1.1)

    http://get.adobe.com/reader/

You can also post this query at Adobe forums regarding this issue in the following link:

    http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe\_reader\_forums/adobe\_reader

    Hope this information is useful.
