Canon Printer Model i 960 won't print at all ( suspect bad printhead ).

Canon Printer Model I 96o was working fine. Added new ink cartridges and then could no longer print. Did all the Canon recommended troubleshooting but nothing worked. The error lamp indicates problems with the printhead. Took out printhead and thoroughly cleaned it and all electrical contacts. But nothing changed. Don't seem to do anything that involves communication with printhead. I suspect there are problems in the printhead or circuitry controlling the printhead. My question is how do I isolate the specific problem, Also where do I buy a replacement printhead, and is it worth it for a four year old printer?

Would appreciate any comments.

    Hi,

You may troubleshoot Canon i 960 by following the steps and check.

    a. Shut down and restart the computer that is hooked up to your Canon i960 printer.

    b. Locate the power button on the bottom right corner of the Canon i960 printer. If the button is not lighted, press it to turn on the printer. If the light is flashing orange, see Step 11.

    c. Read through the Easy Setup Instructions included with the printer. If you suspect that there is an issue with the printer drivers, remove the setup CD from your computer, restart the system and install the drivers again.

    d. Lift the front of the printer housing upward and locate the ink compartment. Check to see whether all ink cartridges are installed in the correct location. Switch the ink cartridges, if necessary.

    e. Close the printer housing and run a test print to see whether there are ink issues. Depending on the outcome, replace empty cartridges, align the print heads or run a cleaning cycle.

    f. Check to see whether the type of paper matches the settings on your Canon i960 printer. Change the media type in the print menu, if necessary, and change the print quality.

    g. Turn the printer off and allow it cool down for at least 15 minutes. Excessive use can cause the print heads to overheat, especially if you are using heavy paper.

    h. Remove any paper jams by gently pulling the stuck paper through the print rollers. Pull the paper either up from the top or down from the bottom of the feed path. Push "OK" to resume the printing process.

    i. Clean the paper feed roller. Hold the "Resume/Cancel" button down until the power light flashes orange three times. Repeat this process twice to completely rotate and clean the paper feed roller on the Canon i960 printer.

    j. Turn the printer off. Open the housing and check for foreign objects that may be blocking the internal components.

    k. Determine what error message is being displayed by the orange flashing light. Two flashes indicates that the paper tray is empty. Three flashes suggest a paper jam. Four flashes means that an ink cartridge needs attention or replacement. When you see five flashes, examine the print head. Eight flashes indicates the waste ink needs emptying, while nine flashes means that your printer is not communicating properly with your computer or other media device. When the printer flashes orange 11 times, the print head alignment is not working properly.

    l. Unplug the USB cable that connects the Canon i960 printer to your computer and plug it into another USB port. The USB cable may be attached to a port that is too slow.

    m. Check the computer screen for error boxes that appear. See your user manual to determine how to fix these issues.

After any commands like printing a test page, cleaning the nozzles, alignment, anythig having to do with printer maintenance, I get an error message " Operator Error. Press the Resume Cancel Button. If this doesn't correct the problem, turn the printer off and then on and try again"This does not do anything but bring up the same error message and the error lamp flashes with a sequence of green and then five orange flashes.

Did a reset. Did all the recommended Canon Guide Manual procedures. Used the Microsoft FixIt Utility, and the HP Printer Troubleshooter Utility.Took out the printhead and cleaned it thorughly. Also put slight air pressure on nozzles and did get ink to flow. There is no blockage. After all this still no clue as why it won't print. The error lamp flashes five times in a row which according to the guide manualI is indicative of Printhead problems. Idon't seem to be able to communicate for any actions that would involve the PrintHead. I don't have a schematic or any electrical documentation so I can't do any electrical continuity.checks. I don't want to purtchase an expensive Printhead unless I have a firm diagnosis about the existing Printhead. I would like to know how to troubleshoot this piece of hardware (Printhead).

This was a printer with remarkable qualities for photo work until I replacedtwo printer cartridges and the it stopped working completely. It powers on but won't print.
