my Zune player won't turn off and the back button won't work either...I'm assuming the only solution is a hard reset but I don't know how to do that.

That link was provided in 2012 when the Zune website was still up and running.  This page has the steps on how to do a hard reset for a Zune device (starting about halfway down):

    http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-on-other-devices/windows-phone-7/remove-and-reinstall-zune

There's also this handy forum post that gives some clearer steps for each different model:

    Hello KatiePaul,

Thanks for posting on the forum.

Restoring (or reformatting) your player's software to its original factory settings is a last resort for fixing a problem with your player.

Here is the link to help you perfom a hard reset on Zune device :

    Hope this helps.

If the above doesn't work (you need the back button...) there is a reboot trick that sometimes helps.

Connect your zune, go into settings, and 'install games.'  this will install games (you can remove them later if you like) and force a device reboot.  Se if you can jump in with the process outlined above when it starts to reboot.

I would love to know exactly where you see ANY information on a hard reset for a zune on the above link. If you look through the zune **** on there, nowhere does it tell you how to reset. Just spent 20 minutes researching that very fact. My zune is no longer being recognized by the computer or anyone's computer. Can't even connect period, and your link is RIDICULOUS!

On one of my older Zunes, hold down three buttons: the back button, the play/pause button, and  either the top of the big button  or right side of it.  Hold it for 5 seconds. It takes a little finger acrobatics to do it!!!
