    Hi,

Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

Smax4pnp.exe is a system process that is part of the SoundMAX software program. It is not necessary for sound to work on your computer but is mainly used to run or add components to the SoundMAX software program.

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

    Step 1:

Boot to Safe Mode and check if the issue persists there.

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222

    Step 2:

Place the computer in clean boot state, then boot to normal mode and check if it helps.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting try the steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state.

    Method 2:

Try removing the smax4pnp.exe from your computer and check if it helps.

Follow the steps to remove smax4pnp.exe:

    a.       Press "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" on your computer to open the Windows Task Manager." Click the "Processes" tab on the top.

    b.      Scroll through and click "Smax4pnp.exe." Click "End Process" to stop its running process

    c.       Click the Windows "Start" button and click "Search." Click "Search All Files and Folders" on the left panel to open the search box.

    d.      Search for and delete this file: Smax4pnp.exe.

    e.      Empty the recycle bin to complete the removal process.

    Hope the information is helpful.
