Where can I find a driver list for My Current PC

Is there an easy way to get a list of the current drivers installed (with version number preferable) on my PC so that I can get these drivers prior to reformatting the hard drive and then I would be ready to reinstall them?

I am running Windows XP Pro on this machine and if it makes any difference it is a Dell Dimension 4500 desktop machine.

The 2 main reasons that Service Pack installations fail are:

    • malware
    • outdated drivers

In particular, SP2 was a huge step forward for XP - and if you don't have SP2 compatible drivers there's no telling what'll happen when you try to install the Service Pack.  This was a huge problem back when SP2 came out!

PC Manufacturer's are aware of this, and have ensured that the proper compatible drivers are uploaded to their website.  FYI - here's a list of when Windows versions and Service Packs were released:  http://www.carrona.org/winreldt.html  SP2 was released on 6 Aug 2004 - so those drivers that were released around that time (or after it) are definitely those that you have to be really concerned with.

Click Start then right-click My Computer and click Properties.  then click Device Manager.  There is the list you're looking for.  You can go to http://www.dell.com and go to the support section, put in your service tag, and it will show all the drivers you need for your computer.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

It is not quite that easy.  When I go to Dell and put in my service tag or my or express service code it gives me a list but it does not look to be a list of what I really have installed and also gives me optional or recommended drivers also.

In the device manager it does not tell me which drivers are installed by Windows and which drivers I need to get some where else.  Also identifying the drivers from the device manager and trying to pair them up with Dell does not appear to be straight forward.

Is there any software program that I can run with analyzes the system and will list my drivers with version numbers and names?

    usama,

Forgive me for being so direct, but why did you write three paragraphs with no intention of answering the question?

Dell will give you a list of all the drivers for devices they have put on your model.  You have to choose the ones that you have.  In Device Manager you have to right-click the entries you're interested in and click Properties.  It's all there, but it does require a few minutes of effort on your part.  Compared to the task you're talking about undertaking, it's a tiny fraction of the time you'll spend installing Windows, your applications, drivers, updates, and putting your data back.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.
