Question Summary

I have questions related to importing video from a digicam

Which version of Windows Live Movie Maker are you using ?

Version 2011 (15.4.3538.513)

Choose your Operating System version :

Windows 7

Additional Details

Hi, I have a Sony DCR-PC101 Digital video camera recorder mini DV. I would like to transfer via an iLink cable the tapes to my PC to watch and edit. I watched several posts on YouTube about how to do this. I have windows live movie maker correctly installed on my pc. My pc recogonizes the camera when I connect it via the iLink cable. When I start the download the windows movie maker screen stays blank. Even though I can see the video playing on the cameras screen. When the tape ends or I stop the transfer I get the following message "The video was not imported correctly. Verify that the digital tape is not blank, and then try again" I know the tape is not blank.   I contacted Sony and their response was:

"I'm sorry that the videos cannot be transferred to the Computer using iLink connection. Please make sure the video capture card and Software are configured properly to receive the i.LINK signal from the Camcorder.

NOTES:

  1. Depending on the video capture card and software you are using, you may need to manually configure the capture card and software to receive a signal from the i.LINK port. If applicable, check the Help files of the Software or contact the video capture card or software manufacturer for further information.
  2. Sony digital camcorders are not provided with and do not require special device drivers for i.LINK connectivity. The device drivers that allow i.LINK connectivity should be provided with the video capture software. If the software you are using does not appear to have the required drivers, you will need to contact the software manufacturer.

If the issue is still not resolved, try closing and reopening the video capture Software.

If the issue is still not resolved, try restarting the Computer with the Camcorder connected and powered on.

If the issue is still not resolved, try using a different i.LINK cable or connecting to another i.LINK port or different Computer.

Thank you for your time."

I have and ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card, but am not sure how to cuztomize/change settings.  The other suggestions (ie different iLink cable and port) did not work.

Some additional info that maybe helpful...I also attempted to transfer it it using Creative video editing software. Same problem except the error message reads "You cannot use the capture mode because the iLink mode on the HDV machine is not identical to the recorded format on the tape. Please check the tape status and make sure

the contents of the tape is HDV format and then reconnect the iLink again."

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here's a related thread on capture via Firewire (aka i.Link).

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_7-pictures/unable-to-capture-hdv-video-with-canon-vixia-hv40/48bca32e-011b-4025-a119-539bad52c389

The consensus, in that case, was that the default drivers that were loaded for the Firewire (IEEE1394) card weren't working.  You can check to see if there is an updated driver for your Firewire port.  Additionally others ended up buying a new Firewire card with matching drivers.

I'd check with your PC manufacturer on this because your Firewire capture is not working correctly under Windows 7.

    Hi jvfjr,

Thanks for providing detailed information of your issue. Since same issue occured when using a different editting software, this confirms that it is not an application specific issue. Windows Live Movie Maker support group handles files and application itself concern, issues beyond that are out of scope and can be best address by the specific factor of the issue.

I advise to contact iLink support group, for best assistance for this issue.

    Thanks,

    Windows Live Abegail S.
