wizard to setup adhoc wireless network not showing turn on internet sharing in win 7.. how do I re-enable this?

Hi guys,

I want to setup an ad-hoc wireless network on my laptop which is currently connected to the internet through the ethernet LAN connection.

I've followed this procedure:

N.B. This procedure used to work for me in the past but it is no longer working.

  1. Open Network and Sharing center.
  2. Under Change your networking settings> Setup a new connection or network.
  3. Set up a wireless ad-hoc (computer to computer) network <<-- note that this requires the Wireless LAN adapter to be enabled.
  4. next>next> added network name, security type (WEP)> password etc> don't save this network> next
  5. The next screen shows the conncection is ready to use.

Here is the problem: It used to show an option for "Turn on Internet Sharing" on this page. It is no longer there.

After a bit of searching on the net, if found out the reason for this is as follows (http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/166696-turn-internet-connection-sharing-missing.html):

If you share your Internet connection, Internet connection sharing (ICS) will be disabled if you disconnect from the ad hoc network, you create a new ad hoc network without disconnecting from the old ad hoc network for which you enabled ICS, or you log off and then log back on (without disconnecting from the ad hoc network).

If you set up an ad hoc network and share your Internet connection, and then someone logs on to the same computer by using Fast User Switching, the Internet connection will still be shared, even if you didn't intend to share it with that person.

The closest solution I've found is at http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-networking/1037-ad-hoc-internet-connection-sharing.html post#8

  1. Open Network and Sharing Center
  2. Go to Change Adapter Settings
  3. Find the adapter for the default internet connection (it was a PPPOE in my case)
  4. Right click on that -> Cancel as Default Connection
  5. Right click -> Properties -> Sharing tab
  6. Uncheck "Allow other network users to connect ..." if it is not
  7. Setup the ad-hoc as cocaine explained in the previous post, the Turn on Internet connection sharing should appear

However, I am not able to do step-4 as above. In my case, instead of the PPPOE connection, it is my ethernet LAN conncetion.

Sorry for the loooong post but I wanted to make sure the problem is crystal clear, can someone please help me fix it.. Many thanks in advance :)

    Hi,

    1. Were there any changes made in the Computer prior to this issue?

Perform the following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Check if the issue persists when the Computer is in clean boot state.

    a.       Click Start, type “msconfig.exe” (without quotes) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration Utility.

    b.      On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box.

    c.       On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all. Click OK, and then click Restart.
