how do i connect to a public wifi that requires a browser redirect to sign in?

hi!  thanks for any help i can get on this. i often can't get my HP notebook PC running Windows Vista Home Premium to connect to the internet on public wifi connections that first require that my browser be redirected to a page where I can accept the terms of use for the publicly available internet access.  I can connect to the network but i can't get to the internet and my browsers (chrome, explorer and firefox) do not get automatically redirected to the sign-in page.  On rare occassions a dialog box pops up saying that the network would like to redirect me to a web page - in which case it does and i can get internet access fine.

i always choose the 'public' setting for these networks. I have at times tried switching to 'private' to see if there is a firewall issue but that hasn't helped.

these are useful tips but i always try them and they mostly don't work. for some reason my pc is not recognizing the redirect. i know the redirect is there because my iphone browser always goes there automatically. when i have tried typing in the redirect address into my pc browser that the iphone has been sent to that doesn't work either.   when i use the network diagnostic tools i sometimes (rarely) get the message that pops up to say there is a redirect - those are the times when the redirect works. most other times the network diagnostic tools try to fix the problem but can't.

i just discovered that my dns server option was set to a specific address and not to "obtain automatically". i switched it to "obtain automatically". i'll get a chance to try this later - maybe this will fix the problem?

    thanks again for your help.

In such cases, what I've done is to attempt to go to another site in IE and it usually redirects to the sign in site.  You can try disconnecting and reconnecting also and then surfing to a site and see if it will then redirect.  If you get connected once, then save the site to which you were referred in your favorites so you can then just click on that if you don't get redirected.

    Hi,

Once you comes into range of the Wifi, you should notify you of the Wireless connections close. If your computer isn’t password protected you just hit connect then browse. If its asking for a redirect page, I would suggest you to ask the person where you are trying to get access from and see if they can assist you.

thanks! most of the time i am at a public place like a cafe where the employees don't know anything about the wifi access other than if a security code is needed.
