How To Obtain A Replacement Product Key

    Windows Preinstalled:

If you have a lost or unreadable product key for Microsoft software that came with your computer, please contact the manufacturer of your computer to obtain a replacement. Contact information for the manufacturer of your computer can be found here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/oemphone/

    Retail Windows:

If you have lost a product key for software that you purchased separately from your computer, or if your product key is not working, please call Microsoft. To locate the appropriate telephone number, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS

A fee may apply for lost keys.

Product Key - Where To Find Product Key

    1. If you bought a computer with Windows preinstalled there should be a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker somewhere on your computer, on some laptops it’s in the battery bay. It will have a 25 character alphanumeric code on it - that is your product key. If it's not on your computer look in your paperwork or on any CD/DVD cases that were included with the computer.
    2. If you bought a retail copy of Windows 7 the key should be included in the box.

If the system is still running and this is not an OEM machine (HP, Dell, etc.) you can use one of these free utilities to get your Product Key:

    http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

If the computer is an OEM machine, this will not be useful since the key shown will the OEM's volume license and not one you can use. In this case, contact the computer mftr. to purchase recovery media.

If the system is not running and the computer is not an OEM machine (one you built yourself or had built for you), you will need to purchase a full retail copy of whatever version of XP you want.

If you had a retail copy of XP which you have lost and the system is not running so you can't retrieve the Product Key:

If you have lost your XP product Key , the best option is to call Microsoft. Call on Microsoft Licensing Fulfillment Center Toll Free Number (800) 248-0655 Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Pacific time.
