I had this problem but my computer did not malfunction like yours did... I just saw the error, reinstalled Intel Rapid Store, and it was fixed. That is pretty much the least geeky way that I can think of to fix the problem, and it possibly would be the most effective.

Had Free Version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Had Mfg installed McAfee
Had Eusing Registry Cleaner
Ran scans nothing found.
Error message on start up indicates tgat IastorIcon will not start
Adobe Flash installer error message appears - Flash is most current version
Purchased Full Version of MBam - ran scan found nothing
Can not download
Followed directions found on Vista page for IastorIcon
Scannow and then Chkdsk
Chkdsk was clean
Scannow came up with corruptions.
Resource Protection is corrupt. Unable to fix all
directed to CBS log then windir\logs\cbs\cbs.log
Did search could not find match
Not always recognizing me as adminstrator
Windows Office Starter disappeared
Legacy Family Tree Program will not open- error message is disc or network error
Machine has slowed up , does not respond to all
