How do I add my NAS to my Windows7 network

Hi

I am running windows7 professional and have connected a Thecus n4100 to my router.

Within the network map in windows it states: The following discovered device can not be placed in the map. How do I place it in my network map and how do I share files between PC and Thecus?

Also, I can ping, with success, the Thecus but for the life of me can not share files.

Thanks in Advance

    So,

    The plot thickens. . . . .

    I have, since my last reply installed xp machines in VMWare player and VirtualPC on my Win7 pro machine

    AND, annoyingly, both of these map drives successfully to the NAS with zero problems

    Can anyone detail how to do this in Win7 Pro?

    On the xp machine it was simply;

    Map network

    Drive =  Z:

    Folder = \192.168.0.10\Music

    Username = Bob

    Password = Bobsmusic

    SUCCESS

    The problem is that I need the drive to map in win7 in order to provide system backup

    Look forward to hearing from anyone who has resolved this problem

    Regards

    SF

    Hi Azam K

    Thank you for your reply, I was able to create the symbolic link but am unable to transfer files too and from the NAS

    When opening the file location it states:

    Windows cannot access \192.168.0.10

    Error Code 0x80070035

    The network path was not found

    It is very annoying in that I can access te NAS admin pages via an internet browser and update settings, users file names etc but I cannot get it into my windows 7 network map (homegroup\domain etc)

    Mind you, the NAS is currently an effective paperweight!

    Any more ideas out there?

    Once again Thank you in Advance

    Kind Regards

    SF

    Hi,

    Follow these steps and check if it helps:

    Then it can be indexed, and added to libraries as well.

    To index a network folder or drive, you must right-click on it first and select "Always Available offline".

    To add a non-indexed UNC as a library to Windows 7:

    1. Create a folder on your hard drive for shares. i.e. c:\share
    2. Create another folder in the above share. i.e. c:\share\music
    3. Link the Library to this folder.
    4. Delete the folder.
    5. Use the mklink in an elevated command prompt to make a symbolic link. Name the link the same as the folder you created above.

    i.e - mklink /d c:\share\music \server\music

    1. Done. Now you have non-indexed UNC path as a library.

    Refer these thread links for additional information:

    Hi + Thanks Techguy_James

    I have previously followed the two guides and have set up users with writable access to the folder on the Thecus

    eg.

    Folder = Music

    User = bob

    PW = bobsmusic

    The NAS's ip address on my network is 192.168.0.10 (set by the router as a fixed IP and confirmed within the NAS setup page)

    I assumed mapping the drive would be \192.168.0.10\Music

    And then be expected to enter the user name and password - this information is requested within Windows7 it never maps the drive.

    Within network map of My Local area connection, I can see my pc, laptop, xbox and router but at the bottom of the screen it states that the Thecus can be seen (discovered) but can't be placed in the map - I am guessing that if I can place it on the map that I will be able to map the drives - Any ideas where I may have missed something.

    Thanks in Advance people
