I can not start up the Workstation service.  I keep getting service-specific error code 2250.

I have replaced the mup.sys file per MS instructions and still get the same error when trying to start workstation service

I'm running XP service pack 3 on a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop.

When trying to start the Workstation Service you are seeing a message like this:

Windows could not start the Workstation on Local Computer.  For more information, review your System Event Log.  If this is a non-Micorosft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to the service-specific error code 2550.

Then if you look in the Event Viewer System log you may find thing like this:

    Event Type:    Error

    Event Source:    Service Control Manager

    Event Category:    None

    Event ID:    7024

    Description:

The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA).

    Event Type:    Error

    Event Source:    Workstation

    Event Category:    None

    Event ID:    5727

    Description:

Could not load Rdbss device driver.

The problem is most likely a missing or corrupt rdbss.sys file.  The rdbss.sys file should be in this folder:

    c:\windows\system32\drivers

We know that XP keeps backup copies of critical system files in this folder:

    c:\windows\system32\dllcache

So you can just copy the rdbss.sys file from c:\windows\system32\dllcache and paste it into this folder:

    c:\windows\system32\drivers

Respond in the affirmative if asked to overwrite the current file.

If you can't find a copy of the file in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache folder, depending on your installation there may be a copy of the file in this folder:

    c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

Somehow or another, you need to replace the rdbss.sys file.

See if you can start the Workstation Service after replacing the rdbss.sys file.

If you still can't find it, you can download one from my SkyDrive, but see how those other ideas work first.

    Hello,

there is typing error in your answer. The file has name rdbss.sys , not rbdss.sys.

So I thought i found the problem reason at first, because I found no such file in my system...

But rdbss.sys was on its place.

What at last helped was simply uninstal and instal Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing and Network Monitor Driver. (I do not know if it is necessary all of them,  but uninstall/install only File and Printer Sharing did not help).

So Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network Connections->Local Area Connection Properties->Client for Microsoft Networks->Uninstal . Than "File and printer Sharing for Microsoft Network" and "Network Monitor Driver" uninstal. Than reboot, and Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network Connections->Local Area Connectio Properties->Instal->Client->Add->Client for Microsoft Networks, and similar Install->Service->Add->"Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network" and Install->Protocol->Add-> "Network Monitor Driver" .

I remember getting that mixed up typing it in!  I think I got cross-eyed when I was making that to put into my notes (that way I will hope to never have to type it in again).  Much of my stuff is just copy/paste from my notes anyway.

I will add your notes to my notes (if that is okay with you).

Thanks for telling us about that.

You can wait and see if someone will tell you how to reinstall XP without losing all your data (I have never reinstalled XP so I can't help with that).

There are a few other possibilities for the Service not to start, but you will have to do a little more work...

Check if the Server and Workstation Services are running and set to Automatic start.  If they are not, make them so and restart and see if the CB Service starts or not.

    If not:

In the Event Viewer System log, under Actions, choose to Clear All Events (it is up to you if you want to save the log or not), then restart your system with a clean System log so we can capture only the latest start up errors.

If the Service fails to start, go back to the Event View System log and copy/paste the events that have a red X in them back here.  Those would be the latest startup errors and I think you should see at least one Event ID 7024 in there- we need to see what the others say too.

If you double click an event, it will open a Properties window with more information.  On the right are black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to your Windows clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of your issue, click the third button under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, Paste or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis.  Remove any personal information from your information after pasting if you are compelled to do so.

If you paste an Event, it will look something like this one from before:

    Event Type:    Error

    Event Source:    Service Control Manager

    Event Category:    None

    Event ID:    7024

    Description:

The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA).

Let's see what the other events around the time of the Service not starting have to say for clues.

Then answer these questions as best you can:

How did you discover that the Service was not starting?

Is your system on a corporate domain or is it just on something like a home network?

What is your Internet browser and version?

Do you have any kind of third party firewall software installed?

Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation:  McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.

What do you see that you don't think you should be seeing and when do you see it?

If the system used to work properly, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did work properly?

Unfortunately, replacement of the rdbss.sys file did not solve the problem. The error 2250 still occurs even after a restart.  Perhaps a reinstall of XP will cure this problem.  Can this be done without losing all my data to be lost.
