I need to run system recovry in XP, and have tried the F10, and F11 keys on start-up, but the Recover option does not appear. Any other options?

    Hi,

This is the HP advice to start their Recovery Process in XP machines:

"Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears"

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=au&lc=en&docname=bph07145#N296

Did you follow HP's exact instructions?

If you did, please explain what problems led to you wanting to reinstall the Operating System.

It may not be only be a Software problem; but may involve Hardware problems as well.

    Cheers.

    Edit: FYI from HP:

NOTE:HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.

Why do you think you need to run system recovery?

Do you know that if you use the built in system recovery (from your unspecified hardware manufacturer), it will wipe out all your personal files and return you to the "as shipped from the factory" condition?  Maybe that is what you want.

Why don't you enlighten us with a few details and you will probably get some better advice:

Since the Microsoft Answers forum does not prompt for any kind of system information when a new question is asked, we know absolutely nothing about your system.  Not knowing fundamental information about a problem prolongs the frustration and agony of resolving these issues.

Thank you MS Answers, for making the resolution of simple problems as frustrating and time consuming as possible.

Please provide additional information about your system as best you can:

What is your system make and model?

What is your XP Version and Service Pack?

What is your Internet browser and version?

Does your system have IDE drives or SATA drives?

Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation:  McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.

Was the issue preceded by a power interruption, aborted restart, or improper shutdown?  (this includes plug pulling, power buttons, removing the battery, etc.)

Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive (internal or external)?

Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD that is the same Service Pack as your installed Service Pack (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)?

What do you see (exactly) that you don't think you should be seeing and when do you see it?

What do you not see that you think you should be seeing?

If the system used to work properly, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did work properly?

Assuming your HP PC does have a recovery partition, I believe you need to press the Esc key immediately after turning your PC on in order to get the Startup Menu.

Then when you see the option that says"Press <F11> for recovery," you can press the F11 key. I doubt you will also need to press the Fn key, but I'm just throwin' that out there.
