Windows doesn't recognize tv as audio device after it's been turned off and turned back on.

I have my computer hooked up to an HD TV using and HDMI cable.  The sound is also pushed through to the TV.  The HDMI cable is hooked up to my Radeon HD 6950.  I'm using Realtek HD Audio Manager with the ATI HMDI Audio device as a default.  All drives are up to date.

When I turn my TV off and leave the computer running, I come back and turn the TV on and the computer acts like the TV is not plugged in, but only for audio.  The video is still there.  In the Sound Playback window I noticed that Windows would switch to the optical audio device even though there is nothing plugged in that jack.  I disabled all of the other devices and only left the HDMI device so it won't switch to something else.  Now when I turn on the TV it just acts like nothing is plugged in at all for audio.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

    1. What is the make and model of your computer?
    2. Which edition of Windows are you running?

Example: Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit.

There could also be a possibility that a manual input is needed from your television set to the HDMI connection, please check your televisions Menu\setting where the HDMI and PC connection is verified after it is connected for options to switch Screens and Audio.

Please follow the steps mentioned below to help troubleshoot the issue.

    To disable speaker audio enhancements

    a. Open Sound by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type sound, and then click Sound.

    b. On the Playback tab, click Speakers, and then click Properties.

    c. Click the Enhancements tab, and then select the Disable all enhancements check box.

If you don't see an Enhancements tab in the Speakers Properties dialog box, those features are not available for your speakers and this procedure is not applicable to your computer.

If disabling audio enhancements solves the audio problem you're experiencing, this typically indicates that your audio driver needs to be updated.

The TV is connected properly and audio does come through the TV speakers.  It is only when I turn the TV off and then turn it back on while leaving the computer running the whole time.  When this happens the HDMI device (on the Sound window) says "Not plugged in" even though the TV is still plugged in.

The HDMI device is already set to the default device.  Also it is the only device I use.
